"I don't agree with the whole article, but there are some good points in there (not what you copy/pasted). Companies are laying off and screwing their employees all the time so I'm working only for myself. If a better opportunity comes along, I'll take it in a second. Fuck it, I'm always looking for a better opportunity.

As far as the casual atmosphere or whatever, what's wrong with that? With essentially no companies offering pensions anymore and a social security system that'll bankrupt soon, we'll probably be working until we're 90 anyway; might as well enjoy being at work and not burn-out in 20 years.

But the whole coddling and praise part is kinda weird, don't agree with that..."

agree, coddling and praise... yeah that shit doesn't fly.

company loyalty died with layoffs and no reward for staying...

not to mention but aren't you older than chance?

^ X i think odd, wikipedia has quite different ranges than I would expect

yep you're at the end of the X scale

Y is "Generation Y first appeared in an August 1993 magazine AD Age editorial to describe those children born between 1980–1995"

yuck, '95. I'd guess that there is a decided difference between those born in the 80's and then in the 90's....

Intellectualism in America stays mostly stagnant
Despite claims of the 'dumbing of America,' many say otherwise

Quote :
"While reading rates have decreased in recent years and children are spending more time on the Internet and playing video games, Steven Greene, associate professor of political science, said it does not mean Americans are becoming less intelligent."

Quote :
"Cameron Jones, a sophomore in engineering, said even though people are using their time differently, it does not affect their intelligence.

'I can't imagine that we as Americans are getting less intelligent,' Jones said. 'There are more college graduates in the United States now then there were 50 years ago, and I think this is a good reflection of a nation's intelligence.'"

Gen Y: Really All That Narcissistic?

Quote :
"Dr. Jean Twenge, professor of psychology at the University of San Diego, goes on to conclude that Ys are narcissistic: focused only on themselves and incapable of acknowledging or appreciating others' points of view or circumstances. Twenge's conclusions are based on her analysis of the data from a standardized narcissistic personality inventory, in which respondents score themselves against statements such as 'I think I am a special person.' Analyzing data from published reports, Twenge concluded that the average college student is 30 percent more narcissistic in 2006 than was the average student in 1982 [emphasis added].
The critics are concerned that the culture of praise Ys experienced as a child will reach deeply into the adult world, suggesting that they feel insecure if they're not regularly complimented. Bosses are being made to feel the need to lavish praise on young adults with the threat that they will wither under an unfamiliar compliment deficit."

The Young Know Caroline's a Kennedy, but Which One?

Quote :
"Say 'Caroline Kennedy' to Bess Goden, 23, and she pauses, working quietly to exactly place it.

'I'm like, "Is she a Kennedy Kennedy, or is this one of the cousins?"' Ms. Goden, an aspiring actress, asked while taking a cigarette break from her job at the Borders bookstore cafe on West 34th Street. 'She's the one with the brother who died in the plane?'"

Quote :
"'I don't know who her father is, but if you told me, I bet I would know,' said Michelle Kuhns, 21, a senior at St. John's University in Queens who was working during her holiday break at a bagel shop on Long Island. 'I've heard the name, yes. But that's it.'"

^^ Okay, doofus--let me frame it up for you. One of the young people interviewed in the article above is a 21-year-old senior at a university and she doesn't know who Caroline Kennedy's father is--or even who Caroline Kennedy is, for that matter. And other twentysomethings seemed just as clueless.

Let me make it real simple for you: Is this sheer lack of basic knowledge (current events, recent American history, and so on) acceptable to you? I mean, the young people in question weren't asked to do math or anything.

There's no reason to know who Caroline Kennedy is. She's not been in the public sector until recently, so other than that what exposure would we have to her?

As one of those border kids (1980 here) I don't feel I'm really Gen X, but I'm certainly not a Millennial either. Millenials overlap heavily with the "digital natives" who don't remember life before computers in the home (yes, some people of my age had them from young childhood, but not most), Nintendo, and common cell phones/PDAs/laptops.

Some of the things becoming common today befuddle me though. The "helicopter parents" in particular who are there at every beck and call (sometimes unheeded) to advocate/harrass/bully for their students in college and even in the early work world seem completely foreign to me. Also, I would have been starkly ashamed to move back home after college--while it might be a sound financial decision, whatever happened to being independent and starting your own life?

I'm obsessed with stuff like the Kennedy family, royal families, hollywood gossip. So I know all about Caroline.

Even with all that, I still find it hard for those of us that are 25 and up to not know who she is.

^ Well, under 25 should know that (1) Caroline Kennedy is JFK's daughter and (2) that she will possibly/probably be appointed to fill Hillary Clinton's Senate seat. This is really not too much to ask--it's not calculus, for God's sake.

But, Professor hooksaw, this isn't fair. I'm calling Mommy and Daddy!

I can think of dozens of unknown people who affect my life on a daily basis who most people don't know. I'd be more worried about people who don't know their own political representatives.

What the hell does it matter if someone knows who Caroline Kennedy is?

Is knowing all the children of the past 10 presidents a requirement for being a good American? If I don't know who Susan Elizabeth Ford is am I a bad person?

hell, i wasn't really sure didn't really care who exactly she was. i figured she was related to Uncle Ted.

i mean, hell, i can't name all of Elizabeth Taylor's husbands, either. actually i can't name any. does this somehow align me with hooksaw's group of "retarded millennials" who are letting the Golden Age of American Culture go to shit?

But more importantly, why the hell does hooksaw care so much about the Kennedy clan to badger Gunnz into bttting this worthless year-old dog turd of a thread?

^ it's a sad and desperate attempt to convince himself he's still relevant by clinging to icons of his generation. The Kennedys as a dynasty haven't done anything noteworthy recently, there's no good reason to forcibly keep them in the public eye.

The majority of Americans, young or old, don't know 2 bit senators from other states anyway.

Seriously though, they're making this "millennial epidemic" out to be worse than it is. I don't think I know anyone who acts this way. I'm aware some people must, but GOSH you'd think they'd get with the program eventually. I hate this perception that they're somehow incapable of growing up.

There are good and bad things about every generation and as it's been said: the old always complain about the young.

Agreed that anyone pays attention to the news would know that she's possibly going to be appointed to Clinton's Senate seat even though she doesn't have political experience and wouldn't even be considered if she wasn't a Kennedy.

However, before this news broke, why should it have been common knowledge that she was JFK's daughter? Is there a part of the civics books that are supposed to outline every President's family for us to memorize?

Also, the quote from the article is misleading:

Quote :
"“I don’t know who her father is, but if you told me, I bet I would know,” said Michelle Kuhns, 21, a senior at St. John’s University in Queens who was working during her holiday break at a bagel shop on Long Island. “I’ve heard the name, yes. But that’s it.”"

Did they tell Ms. Kuhns that Caroline's father was JFK, or did they ask her who Caroline Kennedy's dad was? I think with the multitude of Kennedy's, I don't think it's a stretch to assume it could be someone other than JFK.
