if you put it inside the turkey while you cook it, it's stuffing.

if you don't, it's dressing.

This is what my mom is claiming; you're both wrong, because not only is it always called stuffing. If you feel the need to differentiate, stuffing is what's cooked outside of the turkey, and dressing is what's cooked inside. The reason: it's called stuffing year-round, and more often cooked independently of the turkey, so reserve the different term for the different means of cooking.

they had a turkey dinner at the work cafe the other day

the new hire, this overtly southern 'neck from clemson (she takes pride in being the largest neck in any room here in delaware) asked for double dressing, no mashed potatoes

the puerto rican (but philly born and bred) sever lady was utterly confused

untill i swooped in for the rescue

Quote :
"In addition to stuffing the body cavity of animals, including mammals, birds, and fish, various joints of larger animals may be stuffed after they have been deboned or a pouch has been cut into the joint. Popular recipes include stuffed chicken legs and stuffed breast of veal, as well as the traditional holiday stuffed goose or turkey. Many types of vegetables are also suitable for stuffing after their seeds or marrow has been removed. Tomatoes, capsicums (sweet or hot peppers), and vegetable marrows (zucchini) may be prepared in this way. Cabbages and similar vegetables can also be stuffed. They are usually blanched first, in order to make their leaves more pliable. Then, the interior may be replaced by stuffing, or small amounts of stuffing may be inserted between the individual leaves.

Surplus stuffing may be cooked separately and served as a side dish. In Southern US cuisine, the term dressing is typically used, and it is generally served only as a side dish and not stuffed inside the body of the animals. Placing the stuffing underneath the skin of the breast will help ensure moistness of the breast meat in poultry."

I have always taken it as "dressing a turkey." meaning the whole preparation including the stuffing and cooking process.

^^I'm gonna make some sage sausage stuffing.

JUST got off the phone with my mom. We're moving turkey day to my house

That's the menu.

And giblet gravy is nasty shit. You fuckers probably like chitlins and vinegar-based barbeque, too.

I gotta figure out some surprise dish. Maybe a surprise dessert, too. Peanut-butter chocolate pie, and sausage balls, perhaps.

Yeah.

My aunt showed up to a family gathering once with this stuff, and now it's a given for the holidays.

^IMHO, it's a normal, veggie-filled salad unless specified otherwise (e.g., watergate, fruit, pretzel, Aunt Marge's, etc)
