It looks like this year is gonna be a homeless for the holidays year...we usually celebrate in Richmond with my dad's extended family, but this year, it ain't a'happenin'. Just Mom and Dad are going to go eat with just my aunt and uncle.

And I'm gonna be in Raleigh, drinking beer for Turkey Day.

In all fairness, a bunch of us with far-away or no family are getting together and celebrating and cooking.

that's good, sooner or later you have to make your own traditions.

my mom's side of the family used to all gather for thanksgiving and have a big day and big feast but its slowly started dwindling as my cousins and brother have aged and married and given birth and things like that. My other aunt and uncle have started going to their other side as well to where last year there were 8 of us. I suspect 8-10 this year. In fairness we do all gather for christmas eve together and there is usually 25 or so then, but i may be finding new traditions for thanksgiving in the following years.

When I was married, we'd often go to my mother-in-law's house during the day and my folks' house at night. The Richmond tradition got kind of pushed to the side back then. Since I've been separated/divorced, it's been back in effect, but like you said, the cousins and aunts and uncles are all getting older...lots of my cousins have their own children now, and they do their own thing.

Recently, we've found out that one of my aunts has pancreatic cancer, and they think it may be terminal (I've not heard all the latest news). So of course, spirits are low, and evidently, the family's not getting together because of that. It's not like I'm REALLY close to her (her husband--my uncle and my dad's youngest brother--IS, however, my godfather).

Back in the day Thanksgiving in my family was the feast of all feasts. Essentially everything was homemade from scratch... absolutely delectable. This year my extended family already had Thanksgiving last weekend... 7 people total. My uncle brought a heavenly ham and a store bought pecan pie. My mom made some broccoli with Velveta cheese, Pillsbury croissants, & a few sweet potatoes. And on top of it all, they're so fake. Mom & Step-dad may as well be considered divorced, Aunt & Uncle are conniving SOBs... so I ended up hanging out with the little kids... at least they tell you the truth most of the time.

No turkey at Thanksgiving just seems wrong.

Well it looks like it's gonna be Frac (and maybe his woman) and me and maybe a few others, not sure who yet. We'll at least fry a turkey, but I dunno about what's gonna happen with the fixin's yet. We always have a good time regardless of what we do, though, so it may just be dandy.
