I would highly recommend that you make sure that your TV is one of the new LED backlit displays

their contrast ratios are equal to plasmas, they have a much truer color (due to the pure white LEDs), and they have a much longer lifespan than most LCD displays

Normal LCD displays have 10-12000:1 contrast ratio....... an LED LCD display has 500,000:1 contrast ratio.

yea...

i've only seen samsungs with LED but let me know if you see other manufacturers.

You'll pay a premium, but IMO it is worth it. I personally am waiting for the prices to come down when the economy crashes in the spring before I buy it, but its definitely what I'm gonna buy (next tv after this will be organic led in ~5 yrs)

From my research, the Samsung xx65 line is a pretty decent product. Amazon has good prices on those. The xx61 is even cheaper, but has lower contrast ratio and such. They both come in 40" at the smallest.

If you want low-budget, Olevia seems to be okay, although I have heard a few reports that they crap out after a year. My dad recently bought a 37" 720p and it looks decent. I saw a Target BF special for a 37" 1080i for like $550.

^They are using first-gen tech, so buy at your own risk. They seem to be excellent TVs, though they have a few flaws with the segmented backlighting.

Looks to be that one going by the MSRP. Damn, that one is enticing. I came close to buying a 50" from that line after being amazed with it in Best Buy.

as hot as that samsung TV is, I really don't want to spend $3k on a bedroom tv thats mainly for xbox and watching hd dvd's in bed with the gf. I'm thinking something along the lines of $1500

^^ yeah that's what i was thinking. it has nothing less than a five-star customer review, and 11 of them, so that's pretty convincing. the only thing i don't like is the lack of vga input and the contrast ratio is low (even though contrast ratios are hard to judge by anyways)

i have a 4065 (samsung) with the shiny screen, and I love it.

had no issues with reflections (i suppose you would if you placed it like an idiot or something)
no blur, been excellent, but i do agree with Solinari, if you can the LED lit one is the way to go now

i wouldn't buy smaller than a 42" 1080p - it's almost not worth it - i'm amazed people buy smaller than a 37" 1080p - seems like a huge waste to me - if you put a 720p and a 1080p 32" tv next to each other you wouldn't see a difference

i've got the 4665 samsung and love it

WTF...circuit city has the Sharp Aquos (tv i want) on sale tomorrow for 1299.99 after a $1200 savings. thats insane. Its 46" which is bigger than I wanted but considering its the same price as the 42" why the hell not. Question is, what time do i need to wait in-line?

thats what I'm saying. Problem is according to circuit shitty.com the only area store reported to have them in stock is the Raleigh store. Which also probably means they have 1 or 2. If I'm not in line already I'm probably not getting one.

Buy this: http://shop4.outpost.com/product/5184066

It meets none of your criteria, but you can't go wrong with that TV at that price (should be $799).

it's usually pretty rare for a line to be for items over $1000. most people camp for laptops and junk. you could always go out there and ask people what they're getting...you can also bribe people to grab the ticket for you (people did that in front of me last year).

go to the 3rd guy, tell him if he grabs you a ticket for the sharp 46" you'll give him $20. he'll probably say sure and you're set.

That Sharp 46" isnt listed as a doorbuster, but part of the 2-day sale...Im thinking pricematch or maybe a raincheck...yeah, probably doubtful on the latter, but who knows...I cant do 5am if I wanted to, so worth a shot.

sold out and no pre-orders. Amazon has the 42" d64u model listed at 1299 on sale and the 46" at 16xx

i guess I could stick to the plan and get the 42"

Just bought the Sharp Aquos 46" 1080p...46D64U. Knew they would be sold out at Circuit City, so went to Sears, where the regular price is $2299. They do the 110% pricematch, so that knocks it down to $1199. If you sign up for a Sears card (or maybe if you just use a Sears card this weekend), you get a mail-in rebate for 10% of the purchase price, so another $120. I think the total with tax after rebate will be $1160. Not bad .

Guess I got lucky then...weird since I usually miss out on all the YMMV deals. A bunch of people on AVSforum were able to do this too, which is where I heard about it. Ive never did a pricematch where they attempted to find out if the other store was out of stock or not (I mean, theyd have to call several CCs to actually know this for a fact, right? Too much hassle). For the record, I went to the Sears at Cary Towne Center.

^^when I Called sears they said they couldn't price match anymore that day but they would knock it down from 2399 to 1699...but then after we agreed on that and he checked to see if he had it in stock they were sold out.

did find it online for that price but decided as much as I like that tv, i'll probably wait and get the LED LCD's.

I just bought the 42" 720p Sharp LC42D43U for $799 from Circuit City in High Point. I live in Greensboro but the CC here said they were out of stock and couldn't order it for me (pretty much the same thing happening in Raleigh). The one in High Point said they could order it for me and I could pick it up in a couple of weeks

This is my first TV purchase - Should I get the extended warranty?

well, that article is over a year old for one thing and prices on 1080p have dropped even further than they'd dropped last year.

second, how long do you intend to keep your tv? you've given yourself zero room to grow. you should cancel the order.

btw, this is a solid deal:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000U9XMCE

52" LCD 25000:1 contrast ratio for $2665.00 delivered to your door. it got the second highest rating among its peers by CNET and sells for $3900 at bestbuy where you'd end up paying 7% more at checkout in taxes

It was a very good price for the size. I didn't have a bunch of money to spend - was trying to keep it well under a grand, so this worked for me.

I probably intend to keep it for about 4-5 years (I'm guessing), so is an extended warranty worth it?

you might keep it that long, but it won't be your primary tv for that long.

either way, the extended warranty is a waste of money

^ I understand that there is a good amount of specmanship going on with TVs, but the fact remains that a 25000:1 spec is gonna be better contrast ratio than 10000:1 spec

the tv he bought has a contrast ratio of 6000:1

kind of weak IMO, considering that he payed around $700 for it

extended warranties are worth it for tvs if you spend more than $1k on it.

in the last 5 years i've bought 3 tvs over $1000 (one is less than a month old). the first, a projection tv had to be replaced (then was given to my brother)...the second, a plasma had to be replaced as well. $500 in warranties saved me over $1200 net.

the newest was purchased through a professional installer so it is pretty much under warranty. if you buy from big box and want to keep it more than 3 years...i think it is worth it.

Maybe within brands, the problems is that the 6000:1 ratio is the only one that sounds even remotely valid and informative
