New to me

http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/tech/2007/11/27/yeates.ut.robo.soldier.ksl

Hope they've watched the appropriate amount of cartoons to know everything that could wind up happening due to this kind of technology.

I know something will go wrong with those as soon as they begin to mass produce them

DARPA and company has been working on this for a long time now. I am surprised that it's developed this quickly (or perhaps I just haven't noticed how quickly time passed... :beatup.

Seriously though, slap some heavy armor plating on that thing, a few heavy weapons, and you've got an incredible killing platform. I'm curious though as to how long that battery pack goes; that's going to make or break this system.

As for those who are peaceniks out there, you don't have to can this technology. There are plenty of serious civilian uses for this sort of technology.

I think it was a year ago when the news of that thing first hit, and it was not that far along (at least from the video I saw).

That was pretty impressive though. I'm surprised they could get servos to move so consistently, and with such precision, considering the beating it must take.

But, I can't imagine how they'd get a reasonable power source in to it, without putting a fossil-fuel based generator in to it. I'd hate to be a soldier and run out of juice for it.

Also, it seems pretty large and unwieldy, which is not something our soldiers can really use (at least not in any current battles).

This has tons of applications outside of military use. There are likely hundreds of industries that could use a device that grants a human the ability to lift far more than they are naturally physically able to. Could also create jobs in areas that are currently dominated by mechanized production, provided that the exoskeleton could be made less expensive and/or easier to maintain than a manufacturing robot.

This reminds me of the suit from the 'Aliens' movie that Ripley wore to defeat the queen alien.

will never happen

people cost so fucking much to employ in health care and liability and if you program them correctly, robots never make mistakes

^^Wouldn't Master Chief be a Terran in the SC universe?

Either way, the exoskeleton would be a good supply and heavy lifter, but when you look at it, it's really vulnerable. Currently our HMMWVs are having a hard enough time staying away from explosions, when you look at this, it can run at a maximum of as fast as you can. Even if it had explosive reactive armor on it, I believe it would still be too easy to pick off.

However, when we make shield generators, these will take off

with the current combat tactics (yea yea, i don't have them ) there isn't much use for a super strength exoskeleton suit, unless you want to make a walking 'mounted' machine gun (ie, walking around with a very heavy gun with the ammo packs on the suit). Only use would be to allow soldiers to comfortably wear more armor, but you can just develop stronger, lighter armor (the new nanotech body suit armor) to get the improved protection.

HOW TO CREATE YOUR OWN PERSONAL SHIELD
