So Hurley was just over here, and we had a little powwow about this truckn adn the plans for it.



So i know a 9" is weaker, but would it really be all that much $$ to build stockish 9" with 35 or 40 spline shafts and a spool???? and would this not hold up to moderately high hp at a significant weight savings?

so for cost of axle(cheap) plus $690 you oculd have a nearly bulletproof 40 spline rear axle, in my opinion?

bulletproof behind a 500lb-ft lightweight racecar but doubtful behind a lead weight throwing a strong 1000lb-ft

remember you will want to put this power to the ground not just spin the tires

ok, but how does spinning the tires apply here? are you saying we do not want to save weight at the expense of traction?? his plan involves moving fuel cell the teh rear and batteries, which whill help some with weight districvution.

so what would we be gaining honestly(if joey stuck with his 70), we would have a larger ring gear, but lose the extra bearing on the pinion, but would have far greater axleshaft strength if he went with a 40 spline 9"

Not trying to disagree just for the sake of disagreeing, but i cannot really see where yall are coming from and would really like to know how my reasoning is wrong?

edit: I am not tryign to sound like i know it all, so feel free to learn me on the topic. I am actually quite sure that joey would rather not spend money on the swap if it were not going to be worth it strenght/weight wise.

like ^^ said, 1000+ ft./lbs. just off idle is a whole different world than a gas drag car with half of that at double the rpm.

as i mentioned before, you can build a 9" to handle it but it's going to cost you at LEAST $1.5-2k by the time you buy all the parts, truss the thing, etc. it's not so much that a 9" is a bad idea from a strength standpoint, it just doesn't make sense financially. also, by the time you re enforce the housing, upgrade shafts, etc. you're not too far behind a d70 in weight. certainly not far enough behind to make any significant difference in what's always going to be a pig of a truck.

you've also got to consider replacements if you do break the thing. snap a d70 shaft, it's a $50 junkyard part and takes about 15 minutes to change. trash a custom 9" shaft, and you're out a lot more $$ and time.

if there's any swap worth doing here, it would be a 14 bolt imo. possibly a 70hd or 80 if you found a deal.

you could have an axle that cheap, but will it last? a stock housing i doubt will hold up to that kind of horsepower. what kind of rear suspension are you planning on running? do you plan to truss the housing at all and if so do you plan to do it yourself? (all the while making sure that you don't warp the housing itself while you're trussing it)

no one is knocking the 9 i think, it's just going to take a decent investment that could be better spent in other areas (pump mods, injectors, bigger turbo, etc.)

if you're looking for weight savings are you planning on stripping the interior? other cheap/free ways to lose the weight would be better than swapping a totally different axle in I would think

ideally the 9 is to be the icing on the cake. with that said the 70 will remain until further notice.


I'm probably not going to be stripping all that much weight until I get the entire project sorted out.

I'ma host some pics here soon, nothing special - other than the debris that was stashed under the plastic bedliner

little update

- tubing bender purchased
- tubing to be ordered in early april
- Dead set on a 4-link, I'm going to do some homework and try to come up with a respectable design point and try to fab it as so.



more intentions:
- rear mount batteries
- possibly get zxappeal to cut some frame-to-bed brackets via lazer (if he has time), and maybe even "the shocker" silhouette for to be made into a hood ornament

fucking fuel everywhere, twas really messy. I dropped the trans pan a few days ago and discovered some small aluminum pieces... cleaned, new fluid+filter+band adjustment and back we went.

bad TPS as well, voltmeter showed static (not mounted) voltage of .24, which will let the thing run and shift to OD (which I havent had until then). any rotation of the sensor led to a voltage above 3.5vdc.... heh, to drive it I just left the sensor plugged up but not mounted - OD around 45 with no drop to 3rd and no TC lockup.

tis all good.

hurley you should take that unit back and tell them the tranny is slippin. for 6K you could have BBWs truck and a slant 6 that runs 11s

tank back up and truck going... had the flex lines backward on the tank, some dumbass didnt pay attention upon installation. Also sawed the cat conv. off, shit's mean mannnn.

bitch is loping now, methinks I need to tighten the HP fuel fitting on #4 injector (saw some bubbling, couldnt tell if it was leftover fuel or air or leak)

oh jesus christ, the tapered piece is the catalytic converter. search DTR or any other forum - I figured you would know that from as much knowledge as you have about everything.

good grief man, humor/scarcasm is obviously lost on you.

now that the "cat" is out of the bag, it's not really a good idea to publicly brag about/post pics of how you've circumvented a federal law that brings BIG fines. if you're even going to mention it, just call it a resonator like everyone else. most people don't even know that 94-98.5's had them anyway.

i always prefer to just gut them and broach the inlet/outlet to the desired size and reinstall the shell. that way you've got no problems with a picky inspector, etc.

also fwiw, mopar actually sells a "test pipe", lol.

yes, cutting and welding on flanges to fit whatever diameter I decide on sounds like a plan.

and what an investment it is- steel ordered and bender purchased.

I suppose I'm more worried about the motor and trans than anything else, with regard to $$$$, because I have a definite end result with the frame and body mods. Everyone knows the power bug bites hard when we get a little taste of it - with that said I've got my homework to do on what setup I want with the engine.


...on a side not, I'm back in raleigh this weekend with adam8778. I've missed this place-

what's up with the lockup? something wrong with it or do you have it switched?

nice mileage though. helps make up for that 50 cent per gallon difference in gas/diesel.

I've actually got no clue why I have no lockup. had that bad TPS, replaced it and it shifts fairly well - just no lockup. msyterync on nc4x4 gave me a few TSB's for my year model, one of which was on the TC creating some shudder at ~1100rpm, and of course I cannot remember the underlying failure/problem at the moment. I've got the shudder, so thats one problem. @188k miles, I'm going to assume the trans is slipping. what a pun

I'm really hoping to replace the 47rh with a 47re including upgraded valve body, deeper pan, and better TC. I'm currently unaware of the differences between the re and rh, so I'm clueless as to what the swap would necessitate. Gotta get that hw done hah

so are you absolutely positive that it is not locking????? not even just a soft lockup or something?

was it not turning about 1900 rpms at 60??you need to find out what gears you got..... it is worth putting a jack under the axle to find out.

completely positive about the lack of lockup, even the slightest increase in throttle nets a raise in rpm with no change in vehicle speed. as well in OD, the revs drop back to nearly idle when i let completely off the pedal at 60-70mph. it should maintain that given rpm (or a directly related value during deceleration) with lockup until the brake is applied (TC unlock), or the truck reaches a fairly low speed, damn nigh necessitating a gear-down.

@ 2000rpm, .69:1 OD, 3.55 gears w/ 31.6" OD tires (265/75-16) = 77mph

my speedo reads ~73@ 2000rpms which is close, and that is comparing with a nominal tire size and assuming some error with the speedo.

How many miles is it reasonable to expect a '96 Cummins to live?
I'm looking at a '96 5spd ~300k mi on it, fleet maintained w/records, driven up and down the east coast 5 days/week. (but then again, its been employee driven w/5spd) Orig motor and trans. Thoughts?

OP- I can start a new thread if you want, just figured i might get responses from people that know what they're talking about in here.

If i'm not mistaken, dodge's trannies used to unlock the TC on decelleration so that you can coast further.

^^ its cool. ive heard rumors of a guy that has a 94/94 cummins with 450+k miles and it's still going.


^ I'd think not.just think of the frequency that it would be engaging/disengaging, illogical in my book. from my gatherings this particular TC should stay locked in high gear with no throttle until the brakes are engaged or the revs drop to a preset level - to prevent stall and/or necessitate a gear change. anyone want to chime in?

the nv4500 is pretty bullet proof, i think they had some problems with fifth gear coming off, but there is a spline/keyed? nut that you can replace the stock one with and solve that problem. i know BigBlueRam had one, so he's be the one to ask about them

ahh, I've read somewhere about the torque limitations of the 4500 being an issue (non issue for me right now), but my reason for asking is that I saw a few on competition diesel for sale, and thought to myself.... hmmmm do i just want to say fuck a 47rh or not.

yeah, i swapped one into my 1500. i also promptly broke third gear in it. i'm really hard on stuff though. just get an upgraded (billet) input shaft, and make sure it has the 5th gear nut updated, and you're good to go for big power.

you were talking about setting this thing up to drag race pretty exclusively though, right? might want to go with a built auto. the nv4500/nv5600 are both like rowing a boat. you'll easily be a couple of tenths if not more faster with an auto. not to mention you can match the stall just right, launch it better, and it shocks the drivetrain less.

other than the outlandish specs I've wanted to shoot for, this thing will probably be a street machine. good point on the driveline shockand rowboating. $$$ is always a factor too, as I would like to get the most bang for my buck.

My other thought was the TC/valve body upgrade for mah current trans. that would keep me in a good position for a while, knowing that power upgrades will probably not come for a long while



and damnit I just found out yesterday I have an H1C turbo haha. oh well

also, before i go a'researchin, any of you foolz know the fuel sending unit resistance range? homeboy's about to purchase a fuel cell. it's either match factory or get one with a GM sending unit and autometer gauge.
