If you visit the online technician the amount of whining done by Pro Smoking Ban people is absolutly ridiculous. Seriously cry me a river.
Quote : | "You say that most smokers are considerate of others and will move away from entrance ways. Well, yes, some smokers are, but a significant amount of smokers are not considerate and have no problem with clouding the entrance to a building with their smoke. I have personally experienced this, and it sucks" |
Quote : | "light up simultaneously as soon as class gets out. Keep in mind this is at the same time as everyone else's classes get out, and since Winston, Tompkins, and Caldwell are all right next to each other we all have to walk through their smoke in order to get back and forth between buildings. It's incredibly obnoxious and a perfect example of how your nasty social habits are affecting us all" |
Quote : | "Do you not care that being outside of a building while smoking is assaulting someone else's lungs" |
I mean seriously I do not smoke but the bitching from the anti-smoking nazi's is getting out of hand. We are not talking about someone smoking in class next to you. This is people smoking outside where the shear size of the atmosphere and wind create plenty of ventilation. I occasionally detect cigarette smoking while walking through campus but it is no where comparable in magnitude to the build up of smoke if it occurred inside. Luckily in this modern age smoking is banned inside except for in a few circumstances like smoking designated apartments, bars, the smoking room at the airport. Part of life is dealing with stuff you do not like get the fuck over it. You will not get lung cancer b.c you walk by a smoker outside for a whole 3 seconds; much like how i will not get carbon monoxide poisoning from driving in traffic.
I liked this quote
Quote : | "ou know what, I hated it when the guy in the dorm room above me stomped on the floor for hours playing DDR. I hate sitting next to someone smelly on the wolfline. I hate getting stuck to someone obese on an airplane. I hate someone who brings a crying baby to Wendy's while I eat. I hate the gay guys that wear speedos to the beach. Guess what part of being an adult is dealing and tolerating stuff you may not agree with or annoys you" |

I remember when I started school at State.
I was a pretty heavy smoker back then (1 to 2 packs of Camel Filters a day). I remember my English class at 8:05 am every morning...and specifically getting there 5 minutes early so I could sit out in the hall and enjoy a cigarette.
And as soon as I stepped back out of the class, I'd light another one. Maybe hang around and chat with some folks and whatnot. In the building. Because we were allowed to smoke in the buildings. That was 1990. 12/6/2007 4:41:53 PM |

I definitely agree with that, Ricky.
Besides being detrimental to everybody's health, secondhand smoke stinks horribly. I never noticed just how repulsive it is until I quit. I do realize I just made a very subjective statement there. 12/6/2007 4:44:25 PM |

Who are you to try and protect people from themselves. Everyone knows smoking is addictive and harmful. If they choose to do so anyway that is their own problem. Sorry I do not buy the catastrophic health effects of the smoker sitting on the bench as you walk bye Mann Hall. Maybe we should ban alcohol, french fries, doughnuts, tanning salons, and every thing else that known to be harmful.

It's not truly ridiculous...I think secondhand smoke is actually supposed to be worse for you than firsthand, as it's cooled down and many more precipitates probably settle out. This is, of course, assuming you get the same volumetric dose.
Granted, it's a couple of orders of magnitude less damage than, say, getting hit by a drunk driver, but still...

define occasionally...does that mean every day, at every door? because i daresay that the likelihood of getting lung cancer increases with every exposure...or am i missing something? i'd rather lessen my chances, especially since i am actively making the choice NOT to puff on cancer sticks...again, i'm not trying to take away YOUR right to kill yourself, i'd just like to see you not try to take others with you
and yes and no to the dog - you did a great job of taking it out of context, but they weren't my neighbors...good try, though!12/6/2007 5:14:13 PM |

notice i dont say being exposed to 2nd hand smoke while working inside or something, because i dont recall anyone in this thread having a huge problem with any bans of smoking indoors
again its when you want to blow something out of proportion like getting a 2 second whiff of a smoke smell while being outdoors in public
you see these people sucking down cigarettes for years and years and years before they get cancer or other related diseases, but you think getting the occasional whiff is going to kill you?

quagmire, stop being a pussy. "Oh, i'm allergic to cigarette smoke." I call bullshit on that. You might not like it, but you're not fucking allergic to it. Allergies are a different thing than having a stick up your ass. I've never smoked a cigarette in my life, and I don't enjoy smelling it when I walk around outside. But dude, grow a fucking pair and stop being a little bitch. It's not gonna kill you. 12/6/2007 5:29:50 PM |

^^ we both know there is no study that directly links secondhand smoke while walking outdoors to lung cancer...but we also both know that secondhand smoke can be dangerous in even limited concentrations and that, depending on the person, it can be very detrimental through simple exposure...and, unless you're going to pretend that inhaling known carcinogens is perfectly safe, i don't see why anyone should ever HAVE to suck it down...again, i'm not saying you don't have the right to kill yourself (because, so far as your case is concerned, i'm thinking that's probably best for everyone anyway), but hell if you have the right to, in any way, harm me physically...my good health trumps your bad choices hands-down, and i'm thrilled that government is finally stepping in and making your dumb ass recognize that
also, people are usually allergic to animal dander, not the hair (it's incredibly rare that you'd be allergic to the proteins found ONLY in hair)...good try, though
^ oh, do we know each other? where did we meet? were you in on my doctor's visit? what does it say in my medical record? do you even know what smoke-sensitive asthma is? talk about growing a pair...were you a real man, you could get through the day without giving in to a mindless, unnecessary addiction, but apparently that doesn't count...real men poison themselves!

Who says I smoke weed every day? I don't... by a lot. It's usually reserved to the weekends and when I don't have shit else to do... sometimes. And fine... you got your doctor to write that you have pussyitis smoke-sensitive asthma. They say alcoholism is a disease too, but I pretty much consider that bullshit as well. as for small pox and chicken pox, i think it's difficult to draw correlations between the negative effects of smoking and second-hand smoke and inoculation against disease
you also seem to be relating the hygiene hypothesis and the idea of being too hygienic with people who are fanatically against smoking... if anything, a lot of those people would back the hygiene hypothesis and many have recently begun feeding their kids raw milk - http://www.realmilk.com/
