i had actually thought about that option, but i'm 99% sure nobody I know has one

So my next question, where can I buy a rj45 crimper?

Or more generally speaking, can anybody recommend a decent computer store whose prices wont rip me a new asshole?

Intrex has cables, 7ft for < $5, 25ft for $8.99.
http://www.intrex.com

There is also Anything PC in crossroads are near BJ's and Baba Ghannouj. Decent selection of weird cables and parts, good prices.

They still make network hardware that doesn't auto-switch?

Why do you need a crossover cable?

Most modern network cards can automatically use a regular patch cable where ordinarily you would have needed a crossover.

^^ yes, auto-mdix wasn't mandated until the 802.3ab. For general 10/100 use, the added manufacturing cost wasn't justified.

^ I didn't realize they were adding auto-mdix functionality in PC NICs as well.

^^ I'm rebuilding my old computer for my parents and I only have one wireless nic which I'm using on this computer. I have capital area broadband in my apt. which is wireless only, so I'm going to use the crossover to grab any needed files before I reformat.

The NICs on my motherboard do this.

I've been out of the loop on what's going on in the PC world for 7+ years, so that's interesting. seems like kind of a useless thing to have on a NIC. It would only be valuable when connecting to another PC back to back.

My mom's Powerbook from a good 6 or 7 years ago can auto switch.

Yeah that's exactly what it's for. I would think Joe Consumer would be more likely to need this functionality than enterprise level network geek.
