You can get a cheap hotel at the beach this time of year. I recommend Kitty Hawk just because I know you're already overly familiar with the Southern NC beaches. Just take the beltline around to 64 and follow it until you hit the ocean. Then turn left and look for a hotel.

West Virginia is always nice as are the other beaches. The mountains are cliche this time of year and you've already missed most of the fall colors.

Make sure you go up the OBX through Duck and to Corolla if you make the haul down to that area.
