Has anyone ever used Sage? I'm downloading it now but it's going painfully slow.

Alright so I've used it for a bit. If anyone cares, it's pretty damn powerful and can accept several different forms of entry (you can have it use maple or matlab syntax if you're more comfortable using that.)

Other than a very odd way of loading the software (through VMware Player and then through your web browser) it's easy to use and pretty fast. Kind of sadly, it runs faster than maple on my machine and this thing's using a virtual machine and Firefox. Haha, not that anyone probably cares about this software though.

this is lame.

there have always been OSS alternatives to these programs. scilab, octave have been around a while. sage just looks to have a tight integration and to be particularly suited to geometry/algebra problems, as evidenced by all of the examples on their site.

Doesn't fill the need that MATLAB satisfies. As an EE, MATLAB is my bread and butter. For teaching intro calculus or something these tools might be useful, but not for serious work.

Hey Bill, yeah i've been on since maybe 2005. as you can see from my post count, i'm more of a lurker. but i really like MATLAB, so I was compelled to speak out.
