YOUNG: CLINTON DATED MORE BLACK WOMEN THAN OBAMA
OFF-COLOR 'JOKE' IS A HOT POTATO

Quote :
"December 10, 2007 -- The silence was deafening in the camps of Democratic presidential candidates yesterday over civil-rights leader Andrew Young's tasteless crack comparing Bill Clinton's and Barak Obama's supposed prowess with black women.

'Bill is every bit as black as Barack. He's probably gone with more black women than Barack,' the former UN ambassador quipped on a live TV interview - immediately adding, 'I'm clowning.'

Clinton's campaign had no immediate comment, nor did Obama's.

Jesse Jackson, who has boasted that Obama 'has my vote,' wouldn't touch the political hot potato with a 10-foot pole.

'He has no comment,' spokeswoman Rashida Restaino said.

The Rev. Al Sharpton, who hasn't yet declared his choice for Dem presidential nominee, likewise had no immediate comment.

Young, the former mayor of Atlanta, made the remark after being asked what he thought of Obama during the Sept. 5 interview.

Young, who has not made an official endorsement, said, 'I want Barack Obama to be president,' pausing for applause before adding, 'in 2016.'

'It's not a matter of being inexperienced. It's a matter of being young,' he said.

Locally, Harlem state Sen. Bill Perkins said Young's comments were way out of line.

'That's an insult to black women of the ugliest kind that I've heard in God knows how long, and he should be ashamed of himself,' Perkins said."

It was off-color, but it being an "insult to black women of the ugliest kind" is a bit of a stretch don't you think? A stab at Bill Clinton from someone who clearly likes the man.

It's not like he called anybody a nappy-headed ho or anything.

I think its funny. Maybe we have a new standard to hold our presidential candidates to. How many black women you've slept with. LOL

Why in the world would you even mention this?

^ Um. . .why in the world not mention it? Apparently, even CNN thought it was news, and some have been offended by the remarks.

^^^ Ask Senator Bill Perkins, D-West Harlem. He knows more about the black community than you do.

^ You figure it out. And it's not like "civil-rights leader" Andrew Young is any stranger to controversial comments.

Civil Rights Leader Makes Controversial Comments

Quote :
"COOPER: Wal-Mart, the world's biggest retailer, is used to feeling heat. Critics accuse it of paying low wages, skimping on benefits and destroying smaller stores that can't afford to offer steep discounts.

The company has been taking steps to polish its image and to convince local politicians to allow Wal-Marts in their communities. To do that, they recently turned to a man with an extraordinary resume of accomplishments, Andrew Young. Wal-Mart didn't expect what happened next. No one did."

Quote :
"COOPER: But now Young's reputation may be in trouble. In February, the retail giant Wal-Mart hired the civil rights icon to help boost its image, but the spin they got from him soon spun out of control.

In an interview last week, speaking about the inner cities, Young said it's a good thing Wal-Mart drives mom and pop stores out of business, saying, quote, 'Those are the people who have been over charging us, selling us stale bread and bad meat and wilted vegetables. And they sold out and retired to Florida. I think they've ripped off our communities enough. First it was Jews, then it was Koreans and now it's Arabs. Very few black people own these stores' [emphasis added].

The backlash was immediate.

NIDAL IBRAHAIM, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, ARAB-AMERICAN INSTITUTE: Having some knowledge about his relationship to Dr. -- to Dr. Martin Luther King and his efforts in fighting bigotry. It was surprising and disappointed that he would make those comments.

COOPER: Wal-Mart issued a statement saying Young's comments do not represent our feelings. We were outraged.

For his part, Young apologized, saying those comments run contrary to everything I've dedicated my life to.

He's no longer working for Wal-Mart. He resigned. What he hadn't done on television until tonight is explain why he said what he did, leaving even some of his supporters to search for answers."

Oh wait. I get it. When one black person makes a claim about black women and they should be offended, he knows what he is talking about

but when another black person talks about other black people and stereotypes them

he is controversial?

Remind me again, what does all this have to do with Hillary Clinton?

It seems more like an insult to Obama to me, somehow insinuating he's not "as black" as CLinton or whatever. I don't get how its an insult to black women though.

To add fuel to this fire, here's a clip of Shelby Steele, a black intellectual, saying that Hillary is "blacker" than Obama on Hardball.

^^^ Okay. I just wasn't sure.

^^ Yes, the comments are offensive on a number of fronts. But some here can't seem to figure out why--just like they can't figure out a number of things.

If someone votes for someone bc they are "blacker" then god help us. Why not actually find a issue that is important to you and vote on that?

I think is sad they are trying to "out black" obama. But whatever

I watched the video, and it looks like Andrew Young is just blabbering about his feelings and shit--as usual. Reminds me of my grandpa. I tend to appreciate this sort of thing, but you have to look past a lot of the shit.

And I don't think Young was talking to people like you. In fact, it's pretty fucking obvious that he wasn't...I don't think mentioning Bill's indiscretions and claiming that Hillary headed up some committee to neutralize all his lovers is an attempt to help Hillary Clinton in your eyes.

And it should be noted that reports of this story are not about Andrew Young's offensive remarks. They're simply ways to repeat the fact that Bill Clinton dated black women.

I'm also not clear on how this is offensive to black women. Saying that black women dated the future president of the USA isn't particularly offensive, in my opinion. Maybe it reduces them to pawns, just numbers to establish this ridiculously pathetic idea of manhood and blackness. But that's offensive to just about everybody.

And let's not mention Don Imus/nappy headed hoes. You wanna talk about insulting black women...turn on BET.

And on the issue of "blackness," it is silly to claim that Bill or Hillary Clinton are somehow blacker than actual black people.

Bill could be one giant, offensive stereotype; he could be a fucking hair-cutting, soul-singing preacher who played in the NFL. He's still white. The day he endures racial prejudice and bigotry from the majority is the day Andrew Young can spout off about him being blacker than Barack Obama.

Well put... And it's also worth noting, that given Mr. Young's current public position, or lack thereof, that how he feels about Hillary, or Bill, or Obama for that matter... probably won't help or hurt any of the candidates in any measurable way. Unless they respond in a public venue in a bone-headed way.

^^ (1) I can't verify the accuracy of those quotations. And (2) you do realize that Rush uses a good bit of comedy in his show--to the best of my knowledge, Young was not "performing."

And Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas officiated at one of Rush's marriages. This doesn't sound like the behavior of a racist or whatever you're indicating he is.

Rush has put his foot in his mouth a few times, though--the McNabb incident comes to mind. But these days, Young is running a close second to "Crazy" Joe Biden in the stupid remarks' department.

^Yes, Young says stupid shit. And he was clearly performing. He was telling jokes and shit.

And I said Rush was offensive. The fact that Clarence Thomas oversaw one of his marriages doesn't make him any less offensive, and I think it's pathetic that you think it matters.

And please try to follow the thread. None of your post addresses my post as a reply to aaronburro.

I had forgotten about this thread. In any event, tu quoque much, folks?

If Rush actually said many of the comments listed--and it wasn't in a clearly comedic context--he was wrong. But this has nothing to do with and doesn't make right the comments made by Young.

And I thought the suck-ass "new rules" dictated no logical fallacies. Well, I guess you can slide by with it--since nobody's even seen the fucking things.

Chance

(1) If you think "clownin'" is "young" and "hip," you need to buy a dictionary, hairless youngling. It's Scandinavian or Low German in origin. And (2) I think Young added the word at issue only after he realized what he had said.
