i've been reading over http://dailyapps.net/2007/10/hack-attack-install-leopard-on-your-pc-in-3-easy-steps/

A couple people had success stories with putting it on this compaq notebook I just purchased. The thing is, I can't find the "Patched DVD" on newsgroups, the only image that would fit on a single layer dvd was a copy of RC2. I found a patch, but i'm not sure of the exact process.

Anyone done this or have more elaborate information I could use?


I might just say forget it and throw vista ultimate on it. (came with home, i just got done putting xp on it, but the drivers I found aren't that great)

I realize that I kind of contradict myself above, but I'm fine if a few things don't work on OSX, xp is a diff story.

^^^And you forgot the fact that apple puts crappy video cards in thier computers (desktops at least). If you want price for performance apple hardware is the last thing you want.

Apple currently does not offer a desktop that comes with a core 2 duo, and a nice video card (like an 8800xxx).

So if you want leopard on a fast computer you can either spend 6 grand on a mac pro, or spend a third or less of that and get the same performance w/ a core 2 duo and an nvidia 8800gt.

A core 2 duo (200-300$) will perform just as well as a Xeon chip (1500$) for most applications, and an 8800gt (225$) will perform better or just as good for most applications as the FX Quadro 4500 (1500$). So buying a mac pro is silly because you're wasting thousands of dollars on hardware that most people won't even utilize.

And this is how apple tricks you. The majority of people who buy Mac Pros won't ever fully utilize the power of the Xeon and FX Quadro chips. It just seems odd that apple does not offer a nice desktop version of its mac pro for thousands cheaper that takes advantage of current desktop chips like the core 2 duos, and nvidia 8800 series.

It's like they have the laptops with crappy video cards (nvidia 8400), the imacs with crappy video cards (ati 2600), and then they make a BIG jump and go straight to the Mac Pros with rediculously priced CPUs (Xeons) and GPUs (FX Quadros). They don't have any type of "mid-range" desktop with high-end desktop technology. Every other computer company offers a full range of desktops that include nice video cards like the nvidia 8800 series for thousands cheaper than Apple is offering the Mac Pros for.

So THIS is why it seems so appealing to build your own desktop and put leopard on it. You get a powerful computer for thousands cheaper than if you bought a Mac Pro. Legality is also an issue as v, and vv pointed out, but that's Apple's fault. They don't want you putting OSX on anything other than thier computers.

Why would you need it? It's not like Super Breakout 2 has a billion polygon count.

I just want Leopard because after reviewing the play the referee said it was better than Vista.

You have to have a mobo which supports it, and for a good experience, you need one that supports it well. Most mobos don't support it well, and many (i'd guess most, but don't know for sure) don't support it at all (like one I have).

I'm a fan of both, as well as a fedora boot i have, but at the end of the day it all comes down to what programs you want to run and what OS will support those programs.

I found that its a pain in the ass to keep rebooting to simply run a different program so that's why i've stuck with Vista. I play the latest games which will only run on vista, and most of the cad software i run will only run on windows. I like leopard for other things, as well as fedora/other linux distros but when the majority of programs i run will only run on windows/vista i find it hard to keep booting into another OS for a small minority of tasks.

It's called parallels in coherence mode. pass-through virtual machine with D3D and opengl hardware support.

I've got Leopard running on my Dell 700m, which is old as shit at this point.

Power Management is kinda wonky (no battery display, sleep/resume is random at best) and I've got no WiFi (i've got the intel wifi card, I heard the Dell card will work).

But it's good enough for my purposes (using iPhone SDK), so I'm happy. It's a pretty nice OS.

there was a pretty decent following for the compaq C714NR. Like I said, the community has kexts for everything but the audio ports. Someone even got two finger scrolling enabled. The OS runs decent, but some complain about a semi-shorter battery life. I have it dual booted, but the novelty wore off and I think if I did switch to OS X, it would have to be on something more than my laptop.
