This makes me sad.

On the other hand, they seem to only be banning crappy swords. So you'll have to have wealth and taste to murder folks with swords in the future.

i mean, it really sucks for that woman whose son was killed... i feel for her. its a heartbreaking story.

but on the other hand... a total of six (6) people have died from these things in a 5-year period. i think in statistics... they'd call that "insignificant". I havent checked the figures, but i'd be willing to bet $$$ that more people die from baseball bats or bricks.

still.... its hard to care about a ban on "imitation samurai swords". no other swords are banned, and "real" samurai swords are exempt from the ban.

if Britain wants to make a law saying "take your cheap ass wannabe gangsta swords and GTFO" ... thats their business.

ill leave the vein-popping outrage for people like b4k4, burro, hook, and the rest of the limbaugh crowd.

The same reason I need to own a gun, or a sledgehammer, or a hunting knife, or a series of progressively finer, sharper woodworking chisels. Because I feel like fucking having them whether I use them or not. Shit, the number of things you actually need to have can be counted on a one hand, that doesn't mean we should go ahead and institute bans on everything else.

Fortunately this is an issue for the British to deal with, not me.

^^^ Jesus H. Christ!

Just a few legitimate reasons to own swords:

1. For collectors

2. As art pieces

3. As family heirlooms

4. As a part of military regalia

5. For recreational purposes (Yes, people actually do this.)

6. As props for actors

7. For martial artists

8. As weapons (Would you rather them have guns?)

And what constitutes a "sword" [i] exactly? Is a machete a sword? What about a long knife? All can be deadly--including your butter knife, not-so-smart guy.

Who should be deciding what private citizens need in this manner? There may be a number of things in your home you value greatly that I do not think you need. Away with them--after all, why do you need them?

God damn, your position here is asinine--purposely so, I think.

It makes me feel dirty, but I'm in complete agreement with 1337 b4k4 and company. I don't have much respect for cheap Japanese-style swords, but they're an introduction into sword collecting for many people. Most folks can't afford quality Japanese swords. This ban sticks it to the lower classes.

However, don't think we're any better than the Brits. California's had that ridiculous ban on throwing stars for ages now. My dad got put on a suspicious persons list after I gave him some purely ornamental metal stars to take back to my friends in NC. I'd bought the things in San Fransisco. They didn't have sharp edges. They weren't weighted. They were about as dangerous as an empty coffee cup. Yet they still confiscated the stars and threatened to charge my dad with a felony.

Banning actual throwing stars is stupid enough. California actually bans anything that even looks remotely like a throwing star. And supposedly, people have gotten serious time because of the law:

I like what the Economist said:

Quote :
"The few criminals who enjoy swordplay may simply change their preferences. The same websites that advertise “samurai swords” for sale often feature similar, but slightly smaller, “ninja swords”—which, with their straight blades, may be a good substitute. "

I suppose I'll simply upgrade from a katana to an English claymore then. Given that they define the ban as one on "curved, single edged" blades, i wonder if the ban applies to sabres too.

Yeah, there are plenty of cheap Western-style swords on the market, at least over here.

And decent machetes might as well be swords.

Eh, I wouldn't be. Especially if you limit the term to two-handed swords, as many do. Any two-handed blade will cause more severe damage.

Of course, larger blades can't be concealed easily, so you're not likely to be attacked by a person wielding one. Any hardware store can supply you with various deadly polearms, but this doesn't much matter. Murders typically use smaller weapons.

That is true, but a two-handed sword (or any proper sword for that matter) requires a bit more skill and finesse to wield effectively than a simple machete. Still capable of generating fear, but I guess I'm of the opinion that a machete requires less knowledge to inflict the most harm with the least amount of training.

Like someone pointed out, why bother with exotic weapons like samurai swords when you can simply bludgeon someone to death with a baseball bat or run them down with a car for that matter.
