Yeah, you could make comments like that about the crappy songs in any of the genres you mentioned enjoying.

But I'm not going to do it because it would probably be just as idiotic as the one you made about country.

I'm not a fan of the old-school twangy deep-South country, but I like a lot of newer artists. The songs I like tend to fit into a few categories:
-stuff that's just fun to sing along to, even if it's stupid/redneck
-songs about life being fun/great
-songs about love/family/whatever that make me sentimental

you probably just haven't done some digging. if you stereotype genres by bands that get radio play then yes, 99% of all music sucks. there may be a couple of good country songs/artists on the radio, but most are pop crap. i agree with some of the above and love me some johnny cash, waylon jennings, willie nelson, conway twitty, etc. this is country. the stuff on the radio is just pop and in my book kenny chesney sits right next clay aiken. you're likely not gonna hear stuff on the radio you like so be careful stereotyping a genre by radio songs.

^ exactly. even wilco or my morning jacket are 'alternative country'

i mean real bluegrassy stuff with banjos etc definitely give a distinct twangy sound, but in a way i enjoy. (i do NOT enjoy 99% of modern day country)

outside of that its honestly the modal and chord progression choice coupled with guitar tone. i mean think about all the different bands out there using guitars, drums, and basses but they sound COMPLETELY different. it comes down to guitars, pickup choice, amp choice and then like i stated before the way the music is written.

Thats why its a genre of music.....why do you think we had to start breaking it down into Classic Rock and Modern Rock.....I cannot stand how Modern Rock is produced/mixed. It all sounds the exact same...no originality whatsoever.

Absolutely it is the guitars that give country the sound.....you have country guys playin telecasters while the rock guys are playin Gibson Flying V's.....thats old news. The fiddles also might have something to do with it.

However, those guys in Nashville are not clueless like most rock guys are when it comes to theory...most of the songwriters/producers/studio musicians studied music or a particular instrument at universities.

Take Eddie Van Halen vs. Junior Brown....

Eddie (probably the most influental figure in rock guitar in the past 30 years) given a clean tone couldnt play in the same league as Junior.

However, Junior, given a distorted sound wouldnt be in Eddies Ball Park.

He's always been my fave, listened to him with my dad when i was a kid, he gave me several of his old records.

Followed by George Jones.. and David Allan Coe (who is a terrible person, but a great songwriter)

I grew up knowing damn near every line to every song on DAC’s greatest hits

I had always assumed that he and Waylon were tight, but Waylon throws him plenty of shade in his autobiography

All those old school guys seemed like they were kind of dicks to each other and everybody else at some point in time. They had beef, they got over it.

Modern country is garbage. They just take small town, beer, Chevy, truck, backroads, dirt roads, and other stereotypical country words/sayings, put them in randomizer and call it a song.

I will say though, that Hardy is quite catchy. He even makes fun of modern country music.

I don’t even really listen to it anymore.
