I have not been into gaming on a PC for a long time but I just recently built a new rig. I understood every single piece I wanted except the mice these days. I have never thought that using a wireless mouse for gaming made sense with the potential problems in the past but all the buzz seems to be wireless.

SO... what are the best bang for buck mice to select from? This is what everything seems to point to:

all Logitech of course:
G7
MX 1000
MX Revolution
G9 Corded

So my real question is - can I really go wrong in buying any of the above? Is the G9 with all of it's fancy grip changing and weights a good corded mouse? Are there any alternative to Logitech worth checking out? I simply want a mouse with a decent grip, decent sensitivity, buttons at thumb, and something that won't fuck up if it is wireless.

I've been using the MX1000 since 2005 and it has never let me down. It fits my hand great, the thumb buttons can be mapped to different things in gaming, the range lets me use it all the way across the living room, and a full charge will last you a long time. Highly recommended.

i dont like wireless for gaming. i dont use a mousepad either. I use the Logitech MX518 religiously for gaming.

I'm currently using my second mx518. It works just fine, but its missing the horiz. mousewheel and the quickswitch sensitivity on the bottom of the mousewheel from the g5/g7.

I haven't used the MX Revolution for gaming, but I'd imagine it would be amazing. I'm going to take mine home from work on friday, I'll tell you how it goes.

I would have to say that if wireless is important to you, the SECOND edition of the g7 is worth getting. I broke the dongle once, and lost it another time, so I can't recommend it if you're using it with a laptop, unless you're not really active.

So, if you want a good mouse for cheap: MX 518
If you want a good wireless mouse: G7 (2nd edition)
If money doesn't matter, and you want one of the most awesome mice of all time: MX Revolution

I had a credit to use at newegg so I got the G9 on the cheap compared to most of the prices for all of the recommended mice above... we will see how it goes. I'm going to fabricate a mousepad at home before I spend a dime on something like that though.

While I wouldn't call myself a serious gamer by any stretch, for what I do play (BF2 mostly) I have the G5 and have been happy with it. The adjustable sensitivity is really nice for moving from precision (think sniping through a scope) to free/fast movement on the fly. I suppose the weights are nice too, though I weighted mine to what was comfortable at first and haven't messed with it since. But the G9 looks like a nice evolution of the G5.

breezer, i have been using the g5 for about 2 years now, playing games competitively starting with cs 1.6 through source, and then ranging from tf2 / crysis / bf etc...

the g5 is still perfect in every way imo..

why i would never change to another mouse

the grips on either side
shape and feel
mousewheel's feel and hard click
(sounds odd but) cord itself is made of a diff material which is nice
and adjustable weights

i understand alot of mice today come with most of these, but from my pov its been 2 years and i would still not choose another

I've used a Razer Copperhead for the last year or so. I loved it so much I bought a second to use at work. My coworker liked how sensitive it was so I got her one for christmas.

Razer makes some goooooooooood stuff. I also ended up getting the Razer Tarantula. Its anti-ghosting feature lets me press up to 10 keys at once without any ghosting. It also has the backslash in the correct location (important for coding).

i have an mx1000 too and it sucks, the wireless range is terrible and i think the radio tower near my house interferes with its rf signal or something cause my range is like 3 ft from the bluetooth thing.
(x box controllers are good for 30ft easy)

Remember when those Unreal champion guys came to TGZ? The two of them used Boomslangs and the third guy used some batshit crazy joystick/trackball device. He killed all of us though.

TGZ! man, I remember doing lock-in nights long time ago.

I'm a casual gamer, but I have a mx500, mx700, and mx1000. I currently use the mx1000 on my gaming computer and it's been pretty good for regular stuff. I use the mx500 for lan parties though. If I had to get a new mouse, I'd get a mx518 or g5 as others have pointed out. Great corded mice's.

Wired > wireless for dedicated gaming.


Btw, I also have the creative fatal1ty mouse that I got for free AR (actually got paid $5). While it has great specs, the mouse sucks ass. I just use it as backup.

i got the razer lachesis about a month ago and love it. the sensor is great and im a fan of the sym. design. returned the death adder after a day cause i didnt like the shape/lack of dpi adjustment buttons separate from the thumb buttons. the sensor on it is awesome. that being said i almost got the g5, but just couldnt do the non-sym. thing, plus the wheel click on the razer is much more firm (better for cad/etc.)

g5 ftw, I looked at the (gen 1) g7, battery life and number of swaps i had to do with the one i tried drove me to go g5. G9 on its way, will see if i fall in love with it or go back to my (1 side button) g5. I got used to gaming with the old ass Logitech MX Duo i had before this, used it till it died, 4 keys on the kb out, so i bought a g15, kept the mouse, then the mouse died and i ended up with the g5. I have tried some other brands, i guess its just me but the Logitech shape fits my hand perfect, that and a decent mouse pad plus a gel wrist pad and i am good to go.

For the mice, find somebody who has a Logitech, be it a g5/7 or the g9, and try it. Its all in the weight(for the non tunable) and the shape. Some folks hate how a Logitech feels, some love it, don't spend 50-100, or more, on a nice mouse and then get finger cramps from use of a mouse that is to small or large for your hand and grip style.

the Logitech gamer series stuff has cloth jacketed uber flexible cords, no springy feel at all. They stay limp on the desk so you never have cord adding any resistance to mouse movement.

I load my mouse with 36 grams (all 8 slots full with 4.5 gram slugs) in the weight tray, and that feels 'right' to me for most games. I also find the hot swap dpi setting nice, as with sniper weapons the ability to go from uber high twitchy dpi down to low uber accurate dpi can save your bacon.

The g5/7/etc series use set point software to store and let you do the hot swapping of dpi, the g9 does so internally, so no software needed for most use, thus you can drop it onto a machine and have several profiles on the mouse pre loaded ready to play, no need to set it up anew every time it gets reconnected to a pc. This also means you never have to worry about having 'extra' programs running while you game.

Yay for holiday shipping delays - my G9 will actually be here today instead of yesterday. I am actually mostly looking forward to mapping some keyboard macro commands to a button or two for a few games. I actually have it shipping to my office... may as well plug it up when it gets here and start using it for some serious flash gaming procrastination efforts before the holiday.

G9 quick review:

I love this thing. The satin grip and full weight is perfect for me. My wrist occasionally gets sore at work these days using my generic mouse. I switched to a new rest for my wrist for work... but using this G9 at home I actually don't like using the pad. Using the mouse with no rest and with extra weight has not caused my wrist to strain once. Using my old mouse, I would sometimes even switch to my left hand after awhile.

Very quickly - their setpoint software was supposedly redesigned for this mouse (I never used the old ones)... despite the horrible manual for explaining how to use any features and no easy to spot documentation... if you download it, it is intuitive enough for the typical gamer. If you have no idea about what the settings do though it may be confusing... but I don't think anyone should be buying this kind of mouse if they don't know what those settings do anyway

With my wrist getting wore down over the years this thing feels absolutely perfect to use, especially for gaming to allow me to play for longer periods.
