Anybody got advice on Knoxville? been there a few times, just accepted an engineering job working in the downtown area and wanted to see if there was anything I should check out or avoid while there.

There is so much orange everywhere. When you're driving it feels like a big highway construction zone.

East Knoxville is considered the least desirable part of Knoxville to live with better housing and general things to do available in West Knoxville.

I drove through it on I-40 on my way West. I didn't go on the UT campus but the actual area looked like World War II just hit... shitty...

It was like the South Bronx without the added benefit of having three cool boroughs near by..

if you don't mind football, then it's great. old city has some really great apartments.

i think that west knoxville is a little better in terms of places to live, but getting to down town in the morning is a bitch.

don't ever drive on saturdays when there is a home game and expect to get anywhere, traffic is awful. oh and I-40 is always under construction, so avoid that during "rush hour"

Asking for advice on a place AFTER taking a job is probably the wrong way to do things.

I know from experience.

But seriously, good luck on the movie, never been there myself.

Knoxville is a nice place to live. most areas around north and west Knoxville are nice to live. there are wonderful lofts you can rent in downtown Knoxville called the Sterchi Lofts very modern.
hanging around the city is the way to go there is a lot of history and UT really livens up the downtown area. the Bars in Old city are always hoppin on the weekends! Tons of stuff to do and see there.

Not really all that much to see. Kingston pike is the main drag, and you can kind of get a feel for what's around there. From what I hear, they're building up downtown a little bit more, so you might want to go through there, and onto Old City. Campus is nice just to drive through. It's really what the town kind of revolves around, especially during football season.

I grew up in farragut(west knoxville). There are alot of lakes around if you enjoy boating, fishing, or skiing. As far as driving, you could drive up to the mountains or cade's cove.

Depending on where you work, you might want to get an apartment towards middlebrooke or around the mall. There is a place called THe Grove right behind the mall, real nice place.

I'm actually right near Farragut. Just off of Lovell Rd and Parkside Drive. The company I'm interviewing with is about 1 mile N/NE of where I currently am staying.

I've got a GPS in the rental car they got for me (an awesome PT Cruiser ), so I'll go try to get myself lost and drive around the vicinity later this afternoon.

Personally, I love Knoxville and I've lived several places. The people are nice and there aren't too many redneck hicks. It's a college townso lots of fun stuff to do.

It's also a hell of a lot cheaper living here than in Raleigh.

knoxville is great. It was a great place to grow up, but being young I just couldnt wait to get away from home.. now Id love to go back.

What company willis?

One thing Im sure they have told you NO STATE income tax.

I used to live in a subdivision next to concord park called eagle glenn. I forget how nice it was until I drive back. Knoxville is such a nice place if you like outdoors. You have the lake and rivers, mountains nearby, and decent golf.

gotta try Krystals while you are there. They dont have them in NC. Great at 3am!!!

Barleys in the old city is the shit when the weather is nice, the outdoor porch makes for some good conversation.

They're moving some some clubs to the old city's valarium in hopes of increasing the population there.

It's kind of cool to see a city go orange when they're team is about to play, makes you feel a part of something huge.

Gas is cheaper, no sales income tax, no car inspections. Cost of living is cheap in my opinion.

it's with a company called EPRI. They have offices in DC, Charlotte, Palo Alto, and Knoxville. Even though I live in DC now, I'm glad they're interviewing me for a job here in TN

My family has some land over in Jackson County, NC on the other side of the Smokies, which from TN puts me about 2 hours away instead of 10.5 from DC, a big plus.

Cost of living is probably a lot cheaper, the gas actually appears to be about the same (maybe $.03 - $.05 lower), and no state income tax is just icing on the cake. I hope I like what this job has to offer, because I could see myself a lot happier here.

down town is nice. The plaza at downtown has some cool places to hangout. other than that you have bar knox and that's about it. the mall's on kingston pike road, and that's a little bit of a drive from down town.

I received and accepted a job offer from them last week, so it looks like I'll be moving to Knoxville on the 24th of this month (it would be later, but my current apartment leasing office decided to lease my apartment before my lease ends )

Terrible city. I don't think I would move there even if I had a good job offer. I hope you like orange, because that color is all over the place. And its annoying as hell.

I'm working on finishing up my second week here in Knoxville. I love the job so far (even though a lot of it has been HR paperwork), and the people all over are fantastic.

I'm staying right now at a hotel right next to the West Town mall, but am hoping I'll move into an apartment by the end of the week. I've got two places I'm considering, but can't seem to make up my mind. One is a brand new 1100 sq ft apartment right on Lovell Rd (about 2 miles from where I work), and the other is an older (30yrs) three-story 1875 sq ft townhouse off of Ebenezer Rd & Kingston Pike (about 6 miles from work). The price difference between the two is $600/yr (townhouse is the more expensive).

Now that I'm officially here, where are some good places to hang out and meet people?

i'm still going to go with the old city on where to live. was just down there a few weeks ago.

things are kinda slow there now, but still some decent bars down in old city, then there's a few sparsely situated along kingston pike/cumberland ave.

in response to EZ2Score21's other thread.

I'm moving to Knoxville for grad school and going this weekend to look for places to live. Any recomendations?

I've been to Knoxville a bunch of times, but never to look for places or to experience night life. Any places to check out on Friday or Saturday night? What are good places to meet people?

Thanks in advance."

watch out for that 9.25% sales tax, but big ticket back in NC!

You do get raped on car purchases. In NC sales tax (road use tax) on vehicles is 3% at time of purchase, in TN its 9.25%. I live near Jefferson city, about 30 min from knoxville

I live in the west Knoxville / Farragut area. The sales tax sucks (and I saw on the news they were thinking about increasing it), but not having state income tax more than makes up for it. Just go out of state for large purchases; you're not far from the NC and GA state lines.

^I knew about the sales tax, but I had didn't know there was no state income tax. That's nice to hear.

So, I've done some looking in West Knoxville and places there are really nice, but a little costly. I've looked a little more in the South Knoxville area and that seems to be a decent option. Do any of you Knoxville people know any specific places? I can handle a steep rent, but if I'm going to do that, I want to make sure it's worth the price.

How steep is steep?

Most apartments I looked at were between 800 - 1100 a month. I ended up settling in a nice 3-story townhouse off Cedar Bluff Rd for $850. A lot less than the steep rent of $1800 I was paying in DC

^where do you live?

I feel like most of the places I'm looking at are 2-bedroom apartments and they are running around $850/month. I'm looking for a 2-bedroom place in the $700-$800 range (without utlilities, furniture).
