the book was good and very well written. There was something in the description on apple/trailers that i don't recall being in the book (in the movie Briony has a crush on Robbie). It's been a couple of yrs since i've read it so I just may not remember correctly.

If my memory does serve me right though, I really hope this specific difference doesn't motivate the accusation in the film version. The description on apple is somewhat spoiler-ish so I didn't want to post it but the way it is written could be interpreted as suggesting that the crush plays a role.

Anyone know if it was in the novel at all? Or if it plays a significant part in the film? It just seems like a really dumb thing to change. The reasoning in the book made good sense.

I actually enjoy these epic love story type movies, but then again, I have very boring taste in cinema and I'm the first to admit it.

For example, I love Eyes wide shut for both its deliberate camera work and pacing

And I love love love the english patient, in fact, it could have tacked another 30 minutes on it.

I'm quite excited about atonement

Yeah, Galaxy's getting it. Not quite sure when off the top of my head.

Doesn't really look like my type of movie, but Kiera Knightley's in it, so...

I compared EWS for its deliberate pacing, I like slower pacing, thematically and plot wise I would imagine you are correct, they would not be alike

reading it wasn't bad at all (I recommend the book). I doubt I'll see it until it's on dvd or tv though. it does seem a little sappy from the trailer. When it was just words it didn't quite feel like that, plus I really appreciated the writing so that may have helped me like the story more than I normally would.

The enduring love stuff is a major theme but the story is ultimately about atonement (big surprise huh) in regards to someone who is blamed and blames herself for something which causes a lot of problems but that she did out of simple misunderstanding and immaturity. The trailer may be leaving the wrong impression. It wouldn't be the first time a trailer has been misleading.

But I really liked The Time Travler's Wife (aside from the ending which was a little sappier than I prefered) and enjoyed the movie The Painted Veil. Like the book for Atonement, these are both works that I thought were well done though. I think that has a lot to do with why I liked them because I don't really like the average "chick flick". Where as I don't mind a love story that is actually good. But maybe I'm getting a little sappy as i get older and this story is right up there with your typical chick flick.

I loved the book. It still haunts me.

Supposedly, the movie has a stunning war scene. They used some rare camera span to capture it.

As for the Briony's crush, it is revealed in a "flashback" while Robbie is in France. (In the book). I hope it is not a major part of the movie as well.

I am going to check out the books Duro listed.

it comes out Jan. 4th. not sure where, but its playing at varsity theater in chapel hill. im sure it will play at other theaters.

i heard the reason it pretty much only came out in NY was they needed to get the movie out before the end of the year so it could be counted as being nominated for awards and such. but im not 100%.

Movies get limited releases in NY and LA before going wide all the time.

saw it last night and I think anyone who liked the book will like the movie. The story was translated to film very well in both the way it was told and the way it was shot. And like the book it's broken into 4 parts, but transitions very well.

If you haven't read the book, the movie is still good. But don't expect a lot of action... it's story based. And fittingly, expect the pacing to be a little on the slower side.

I definitely recommend The Time Travelers Wife and I think they just finished the movie. I've only seen the movie version of The Painted Veil but I do know it was based on a novel... I just can't say whether or not the book is any good.

i saw the trailer in front of sweeney todd and i assume that that little girl says the dude raped her sister or something? All I know is I wanted to rip her head from her neck after seeing it, because she looked like a little brat.

Just finished watching it and I thought it was much better than I would have thought although I didn't by some of the emotional punch I was supposed to feel. Besides that the movie looked really really good and that long take halfway through the movie was pretty amazing (not anywhere near the ones form Children of Men but still impressive).

there were a lot of old people in the theatre.

I saw it...and for me the whole love story seemed secondary as opposed to what the trailer shows.

It's about how that bitch really fucked up.

I saw this last night. Really enjoyed it... The beginning was slow and I thought I was going to hate it, but the cinematography was beautiful and it all ended up making sense.

Some of it is still sinking in. I spent a good portion of the movie trying to remember what movie I'd seen the 18 year-old Briony actress in, and anxious to get home to find out from IMDb.

Turns out, it was just Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights.

I agree that beach scene was very impressive but nowhere near some CoM.

The movie was overall a 7.5/10, I just hope it doesn't beat No Country for best picture bc the Academy has a hard on for these periodic love stories.

I did not enjoy this movie.

I did not care for or about any of the characters. And I didn't find them interesting either.

So...I wasn't that into it. The story wasn't particularly remarkable to me either.

The actual making of the movie was wonderful: well-acted, shot, staged, etc...

The movie was very good. really enjoyed the music, movie was shot well, and the acting was solid too. i also hated Briony.

Overall though I felt like the movie was missing something that was keeping it back from being a great movie.

7/10 still
