By MICHAEL J. CRUMB – 3 hours ago
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Rep. Tom Tancredo, who built his longshot presidential campaign on opposition to illegal immigration, dropped out Thursday and endorsed Republican rival Mitt Romney as the best man to carry on the fight.
Tancredo, a five-term congressman from Colorado, has consistently polled at the bottom of the nine-person Republican field. He announced his withdrawal two weeks before Iowa begins the presidential nominating process with its precinct caucuses.
He said he decided to drop out in part because of concern that staying in could split the vote for other candidates who have taken a hard line on immigration, helping those who would take a less restrictive approach.
"I fear remaining in this race, one which I cannot win, would contribute to the nomination of one of these candidates," he said.
Tancredo identified former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and Arizona Sen. John McCain as two Republican candidates whose records indicate they wouldn't be tough enough on immigration.
He said Romney has a proven record of opposing illegal immigration while governor of Massachusetts, ending driver's licenses and in-state tuition for illegal immigrants.
"On the other hand, you talk about what's happened in Arkansas, it's a totally different situation, and certainly John McCain has built a career in Congress being a supporter of illegal immigration and amnesty," Tancredo said.
He also said Huckabee's recent rise in the polls was a factor in his decision to drop out of the race.
Romney was campaigning in Iowa and planned to make a statement later Thursday.
Tancredo said he and Romney met Thursday for more than an hour and he left the meeting convinced that the former Massachusetts governor would do what's necessary to fight illegal immigration.
"He is the best hope for our cause," Tancredo said.
None of the other candidates, including Romney, has hit the issue as hard as Tancredo. One of his campaign ads showed a man in a hooded sweat shirt with a backpack in a crowded mall. The screen goes dark at the sound of an explosion, then shows clips of the aftermath of terrorist acts in Europe.
Dennis Goldford, a political science professor at Drake University in Des Moines, said Tancredo forced his GOP rivals to talk about immigration.
"What Tancredo has done is analogous to what a third-party candidate does," Goldford said. "They call attention to and articulate an issue that the other two main parties neglect or don't see" and then after forcing the issue they disappear." |
It's nice to clear out a little of his one-issue deadwood from the debates (maybe we can push out Duncan Hunter next - does anyone even know who this guy is?) But endorsing Romney? Really? Seriously?12/20/2007 8:36:26 PM |

Simple. Tancredo is betting on two things:
(1) Romney becoming the GOP front runner
(2) an arch-conservative Christian fundamentalist from Colorado being viewed by the GOP as the perfect running-mate for a socially-moderate heretical Mormon from Massachusets
that makes perfect sense to me. why do you people continue to think that the GOP has any sort of defining moral compass?
the GOP moral compass is whatever is politically expedient. doesn't matter whether your thing is beating up Mexicans at the border, or soliciting blowjobs in an airport men's room. 12/21/2007 1:49:46 AM |

I get that he's betting on Romney getting the nod - these kinds of nominations are always a cynical move at best, whether from candidates or newspapers. But Romney? Really? 12/21/2007 2:14:52 AM |

Romney hiring illegal immigrants is different from romney hiring a contracting company that paid illegals ..
Dont fool yourself. Every building that is being built in this country has some sort of a connection to a contractor who has either used illegals in the building of that particular building or another...
NCSU even hires illegals... but of course they dont REALLY hire them ... its a stupid arguement and most intelligent people can see past it, because its just how construction and contracting is done these days.
At least Romney took away some rights for illegals in Mass. You gotta give at least that to him, despite your hatred or disapproval for other parts of his platform. 12/21/2007 11:42:12 AM |

idk if i trust tancredo endorsing romney...mormons are generally located in utah and the surrounding states(colorado)...i bet tancredo just wants romney to win so he will be picked as VP and then the mormons can rise into power... 12/22/2007 10:21:44 PM |

You know what happens when you assume, right? Because you're making an ass out of yourself - I hate that crypto-fascist. The fact that I'm happy about Tancredo dropping out does not imply any kind of love for Guiliani's bloody-shirt-waving police state.
Imagine that. Not liking... more than one guy! Amazing the things you learn when you stop making assumptions.12/22/2007 11:35:32 PM |

at least they don't hypocritically pretend to be the sole arbiters of what defines "morality", "patriotism" and "family values"
but essentially, you're right. And i've been saying the same thing for a while now. since at least Pelosi and Pals took over the Congress and since havent done shit except look like a bunch of buffoons.
I am holding out a quiet, tentative hope that Obama will restore moral credibility to the Office of the Chief Executive, and that the Congressional Dems will follow his lead.
...
but I'm more than prepared to be thoroughly disappointed when none of that comes to pass.12/23/2007 2:42:10 AM |

^ I don't mean to be a dick, but why do you have such high hopes pinned to Obama? 12/23/2007 3:19:51 AM |

it's not a high hope. it's a normal hope. theres nothing high or unrealistic to want moral credibility in your leaders is there?
so ... i assume you're just asking, "why obama?"
because i think Hillary is corrupted, and Edwards is effectively unelectable.
it should be obvious, that there isn't a single motherfucking republican i would vote for in this presidential election cycle. The only one i could even imagine being worth a damn is Romney, and he belongs to some batshit crazy religious cult.

That sounds more like you don't like anyone else so you would rather roll the dice on Obama. I understand where you're coming from. I think that he's very articulate and I agree with you on most of the other candidates. But again, why Obama?
I only ask you because you're one of the few SB posters who I often find myself agreeing with. Also there was that one time where we were both drunk and I talked you into emailing me pictures of yourself masturbating and I kind of hold out hope that we might have some chemistry. 12/23/2007 3:50:37 AM |

^ forgive me, but when someone slams the GOP for something that the Dems also do, I think it is fair to point out the hypocrisy, baldy.

Ironic that you then start bitching about a president with a "sense of morality." Seems like what you really want is just someone with your morality. typical liberal.12/23/2007 12:48:36 PM |

^ i dont want a "sense" of morality. i want moral "credibility"
there's a difference. think about it.

P.S. don't come running to me because you just shit your pants about the Democrats.
I'm pissed at them too: Pelosi and Reid are running around like retards at a retard party, and I will always blame WJC's "dick issues" as being the reason Al Gore lost a shoe-in presidential run. 12/24/2007 2:23:05 AM |

i've not been a fervent Obama advocate. But I am quietly hopeful. I've listened to his speeches, I've read his recent book. I sense a sincerity that i dont get from anyone else.
Unlike Edwards, i think he's actually electable. Unlike Hillary, i think he hasn't completely sold his principles out for political expediency.
Unlike most Republicans, he's not a race-baiter, a bible-thumper, a self-hating closet homosexual, a police-statist, a torture-lover, or a war hawk -- or some combination thereof. He's not a movie star and he's not a Mormon.
I like his quiet religiosity. I support his position, as expressed by his words and actions, that religion is a personal matter that must remain separate from politics. I appreciate his moderate stances, his wilingness to work across party lines. I love his ability to understand and explain the nuances of complicated issues in a populist manner without appearing like a ivory tower intellectual divorced from the everyday reality that the lower and middle classes face.
ever since GWB got his Mandate from God that he was to be the unchecked "Decider".. our nation has spiraled into the depths of almost every conceivable evil that scholars like Chomsky warned could easily happen to an unconstrained hyperpower. We have become drunk on this notion that we can enforce an American hegemony at the end of the barrel of a gun. Meanwhile our economy and infrastructures are crumbling, and we're eating ourselves from the inside out.
Our country has lost almost everything that we used to stand for. And I dont see anyone other than him who seems to understand this.

The problem with Obama is that he actually is an ivory tower intellectual divorced from everyday reality. He's a law professor who won a Senate election against the most unelectable man in the entire nation (Larry Craig could do better than Alan Keyes).
I'm sure he's a fine guy but ... he really just has no experience at all. Being in the Senate as a freshman working on committees, doesn't exactly compare to running the executive office of President.12/24/2007 1:56:53 PM |
