^^^ I could. But since my apartment doesn't have a fireplace, I'm not sure how that would go over. Of course he's 3 so he'll believe anything

LOL @ put stuff together.
See, with my family, the stuff was either bought assembled, or it was a fun thing to watch us put whatever they got us together on Christmas day. Usually the stuff we got didn't require assembly, but still... I got that ridiculous particle board dresser that one year that took 2 hours to put together thanks to cheap and wonky materials.
Also: I will not be old/grown up like this for a while. 12/25/2007 12:39:17 AM |

Yeah, you've probably got him completely convinced that a magical fat man with flying reindeer breaks into his house once a year to leave presents.

^^ not me. probably the movie The Santa Clause that we've watched about eighty billion times in the last month or so.
Why is it boxes that have about 8 rolls of tape on them have a message that says, "Do not open with sharp instrument" How the hell are you supposed to open it?

^^^ Oh that's just retarded engineeringese. Usually you can go at those things with a pair of scissors and just start to cut the tape at one and and the tape will separate the rest of the way down by itself. What's going to be better is when you open something up and go "oh shit" when a piece/part is missing, haha. I hope that doesn't happen. GL on quietly assembling everything so your kids can have a Merry Christmas. 12/25/2007 12:53:24 AM |

Ha. I just went outside to get the last few presents out of the trunk of the car and met 2 other dads out there that were doing the same thing. 12/25/2007 1:36:36 AM |

I've never understood the appeal of lying to your child. Obviously there must be one since virtually every parent does it even for unimportant things. If I ever have a kid there will be no lies about Santa, the easter bunny, the tooth fairy, the stork, how deadly marijuana is, etc.
Santa Claus is one cultural convention that never made any sense to me. What's so wrong with letting your kid know that you have bought him presents because you love him? 12/25/2007 7:59:17 AM |

i think one fear for parents is that a yearly event involving many gifts will spawn a sense of entitlement, and the idea that this separate entity is holding them responsible for what they get is easier to handle than having the kids think that decision rests on their parents shoulders. i dont know exactly, but the tradition has been around for hundreds of years so i'm sure it stood the test of time with parents for a reason. 12/25/2007 8:29:10 AM |

Lots of stupid traditions make it for centuries. I suspect that the St. Nick/Santa story has some sort of pagan to Christian switch like so many of the other Christmas traditions. 12/25/2007 9:08:55 AM |

Congrats!
We just got back from the hospital yesterday bringing home our daughter for the first time.
Certainly a Christmas to remember.
Now we get to prepare for the influx of grandparents, aunts, and friends! Eek! 12/25/2007 9:27:10 AM |

Unless your kid is stupid he should be able to figure it out by the time he's old enough to think. I can't ever remember actually believing in Santa. Maybe I did when I was 2, but I have no memories from before I was 3.5 or thereabouts. I sure as hell didn't by the time I was in kindergarten. 12/25/2007 9:51:12 AM |

Eustace Scrubb from the Dawn Tredder? I hardly see the similarities. Eustace is an awful little turd who denies the reality around him where as I see no reason to lie to your own children and deny them knowledge. I hardly see the similarities.12/25/2007 12:42:36 PM |
