there's 2 versions:
If you trust Musharraf, here's the scoop:
a month ago or so, in an incident totally unrelated to the Bhutto assassination, President Musharraf temporarily suspends the constitution for a few weeks while he gets things in order. Afterwards, Bhutto returns to the country, and at a rally, she's killed by Islamist extremists linked to Al-Qaeda.
This is also what the Bush Administration supports, as Bush considers Musharraf a key ally in the war on terror.
If you think there's a conspiracy going on, then this is the story:
A month ago or so, Musharraf suspends the constitution for a few weeks to make sure that he's re-elected when the legitimacy of his previous elections are called into question (he came into power following a coup d'etat, but has been re-elected into office twice. Some question the legitimacy of the re-elections). Since Bhutto, the Prime Minister, is actually more popular than he is, Musharraf has her assassinated, once again in order to make sure he stays in power for as long as possible. 12/29/2007 10:44:14 AM |
