oh yeah, duh

i knew he was joking about Braxton being a defensive specialist.... but I thought maybe the Andree thing was true since he was injured so much during the season, and then the season was cut short.

well, since all the guys we're recruiting are wings, it's a good bet that whoever is likely leaving is also a wing/guard. if i had to guess, i'd say Taylor, Daniels, Beverly are the most likely (in that order.)

FWIW the rumor mill is saying Farrar isn't going to qualify so maybe it's his spot. If it even works like that.

He very likely will stay.

But he could potentially be eligible for a grad transfer season. Or overseas. We’ve seen plenty of dudes that have no NBA future yet they still leave to go get overseas money. Or maybe they just hate school. But BB in all likelihood ain’t going anywhere.

Literally every player on our team (and every other team) should have declared for the draft. Since they changed the rule and made it so you can declare multiple times, there is no downside to it. At all.

If Josh Hall goes to the draft or G league Keatts needs to stop recruiting draft eligible players. That would be 2 years in a row the top recruit doesn’t show up.

Hall is likely gone to NBA or G League.

With the new GLeague salaries and such, it's going to be risky to recruit any 5* talent.

theres a non-zero chance that there's no college basketball next season. if Hall can get paid anything, it makes sense to go for it IMO. like it sucks, but it is what it is

Will be interesting if college sports even want to play without fans in the stands.

I think the pro sports will continue regardless, but not sure if it makes financial sense for things like college football and college basketball.

There's no way college sports plays without fans. If it's too risky to have fans, it's too risky for players who aren't getting paid. Also, college sports aren't coming back until college campuses are open again and who knows when that will be.

This is may be obvious, but I've never thought to ask but do players have health insurance through the school? Like I know the school will fix sports injuries for them but if a player gets cancer (or Corona) while in school, is there an insurance policy that pays for that?

I know how to Google. Didn't exactly answer my question, but my first assumption isnt as cut and dried as I thought. Don't know why I'm surprised that college sports comes up short...

All of the scholarship athletes that I personally knew had access to all of the sports medicine that they needed through the school, and at times went to specialists when that was deemed necessary. In terms of general health and upkeep (like dental or women's related needs), I never met somebody that didn't already have a plan through their parents.

^^ The NCAA requires the school to give students health insurance (including non-sports related) but schools can decide what to pay. So if a player gets COVID, the school gets to decide whether or not to pay for it.

Or at least that's my understanding of it

They aren't required to give them insurance, it's just required that every athlete have insurance that meets the NCAA's standards. The NCAA provides a catastrophic injury coverage for all athletes that covers both injuries that result in permanent disability as well as any injury with medical costs > $90,000. The school is required to make sure athletes have insurance that covers up to that amount.

Now obviously, larger schools will pay for insurance because it will help with recruiting. But if the school is paying your insurance and you can't play any more (because you graduated/quit/got cut/had a career ending injury) they are no longer required to pay for your insurance so kids/their parents can get stuck with big bills.

No? Per your article,
Quote :
"The NCAA requires every student-athlete to have personal insurance. The insurance policy can be held by the student-athletes, parents, guardians or through the school. But every student-athlete must have medical insurance to be allowed to participate in intercollegiate games, practices or any team workouts."

Additionally, per your article,
Quote :
"Some players have been told that their insurance and the school's insurance didn't cover all of the medical bills."

Currently, there are loopholes that allow schools to get away with not paying for *some* injuries (ie, schools can CHOOSE to avoid paying for them). While the NCAA is trying to eliminate those loopholes, they do (or did) exist.

Quote :
"They aren't required to give them insurance, it's just required that every athlete have insurance that meets the NCAA's standards."

Awesome? We're not talking about student athletes who provide their own insurance, we're talking about schools providing the insurance, so frankly you're really just being pedantic.

Y'all wonder why this site is dying... everyone who joins is driven off by a bunch of 40 year old curmudgeons who'd rather shit on each other all day rather than have any real discussion on anything.

That was in response to Justin, not you. But it's pedantic because, like I said, we're not talking about student athletes who provide their own insurance. Unless he's just saying that the school will still supplementally pay for sports-related injuries for students who otherwise have their own non-school insurance. But otherwise it's just nit-picking a tangential part of the argument and not the main body of the argument.

Who's we? I started this discussion and I was asking whether schools had to provide insurance or not, that was the driving force behind the topic. I thought, at minimum, schools had to provide insurance for sports injuries but even that isn't really true.

NCAA does NOT require schools to provide health insurance, that is definitely a key part of the question I asked.

It's just another example of the athletes taking all of the risk of with none of the reward.

Hi, I also get irrationally upset when others respond to me with facts on the internet.

Schools don't get to decide which injuries/illnesses to cover. Like that's not a thing. Insurance companies do that.

I'm not upset, truly, I just don't get why y'all are so hostile to everyone all the time. Guess you're happy with the community you've got so I can't knock it, just doesn't make sense to me.

Anyways, sure, I'll concede your point, NCAA has required universities to certify that athletes have insurance for athletically-related injuries before they can compete, and the insurance can come from the school, a parent or an athlete's personal policy.

Quote :
"Like that's not a thing"

If it wasn't then why is this conversation taking place? Why was it brought up? It is (or perhaps, used to be but has been fixed?) possible for colleges to get out of paying. Don't believe me? Read this: https://www.al.com/sports/2012/02/college_athletes_rights_ncaa_r.html

Anyways, this is a basketball recruiting thread and I'll let this conversation die in peace.

I brought it up bc I didn't know if schools would pay or not. I then took a pause and said "I should just Google this", at which point I edited and posted the article. Then you came posted something that said the opposite of what the article said, I simple pointed that out.

Nobodies called you names or ridiculed you (I suppose my post was a little condescending but it's pretty minor to get upset about) we've just corrected what you said. You're the only one who has tried to shit talk people and call names.

But finally, arguing about Sports IS the community. 80% of the discussions bw Justin and I have been arguments. Maybe you should think of having a sports argument as joining the community rather than being pushed out.
