Here's a short breakdown of some of our top in-state targets for 2009.

WR Jheranie Boyd out of Gastonia has 7 offers: Alabama, Clemson, UNC, Maryland, Mississippi State, NC State, and Wake Forest. The biggest thing with him is playing time. He doesn't want to be redshirted. He'll be visiting WF, UNC, Alabama, and State in the coming weeks.

If we don't get ATH Zach Greene then I'd be questioning TOB a little. I mean the guy is teammates with Logan Bible, Dana Bible's son. Also his father played safety and kick returner for State from 1980-84, and his mother is a State alum. Sounds like a lock imo.

OT Xavier Nixon will be a tough get. He has 20 offers. (Brandon Barnes had 40 fwiw). Besides being basketball teammates with C.J. Williams, we have one other thing going for us in that we were the first to offer him. Nixon's other offers include Clemson, UF, UGA, Miami, UNC, Notre Dame, tOSU, PSU, and Tennessee.

Safety Devonte Holloman will probably be the #2 player in the state after Nixon. He has 11 offers right now, including Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, UGA, Michigan, UNC, State, Notre Dame, and Stanford. He admits to growing up a UNC fan, but supposedly Independence coach Tom Knotts really likes Tom O'Brien. I think it'll come down to Clemson, Georgia (a lot of Independence players have gone there recently), UNC, and State.

RB Desmond Scott would be a great pickup. We'll need another running back if Barnes or Palmer don't work out there and are much better suited at DB. Scott has offers from Alabama, Clemson, UF, UGA, UNC, State, South Carolina, Tennessee, and UVA.

WR/DB Terry Shankle has offers from Alabama, UNC, South Carolina,Tennessee, State, and is receiving heavy interest from Clemson. He says he is in no hurry to make a decision and will probably not make a decision until after he attends some camps and shows off his skills. He's admitted in one interview that he grew up liking Clemson and Florida. I think he's Clemson's if they offer.

ATH Tyler Shatley (awesome name ) can play FB, TE, or on the DL in college, and even do some punting . He averaged 40.3 yards per punt this past season. He is most experienced at FB though. He ran for 161 yards on Independence in a state playoff game last year. Dude is a straight up athletic beast who finished third in the state in wrestling as a sophmore and was 35-0 entering this year's state tournament. Shatley also participates in the shot put (a career best of 52.4 feet) and discus throw (126 feet) on his school's track team. He has offers from Clemson, Wake Forest, and State. VT, UNC, and UGA are also showing interest. He admits to growing up a State fan, but after visiting Clemson for their Junior Day, he said that they had a slight lead.

He's 6'3" 225 with a 4.6 forty. That's pretty fast for a guy his size. He'll either play DE or OLB. We were the first to offer him.

Other schools that were showing interest include:

Tennessee
Virginia
Virginia Tech
Clemson
Georgia Tech
North Carolina

This guy has an offer from us and is supposed to like us a lot. When he received his offer from NC State in February, he was so excited he framed it. So far he's made two visits, once last year and this past weekend. Scout has him as a 3* prospect and the #21 ranked MLB nationally.

That Nigel guy seems kinda slow for a WLB ... 4.92 in the forty? Hell, we've got DTs that run faster than that. I know, I know, forty times mean jack, but still...

Must be a good tackler to be ranked no. 12 though.

Dowdy, High Point Central star, commits to N.C. State for 2009

By Bill Cole
JOURNAL REPORTER

Ricky Dowdy knew what he wanted to do for his college football future and yesterday saw no reason to delay in committing to N.C. State.

Dowdy, a junior at High Point Central High School, has wanted to play for N.C. State for the past three years since attending a game in Raleigh and watching Freddie Aughtry-Lindsay, a Wolfpack linebacker at the time.

Dowdy attended the same middle school in High Point that Aughtry-Lindsay attended, Penn Griffin. The players know each other at least slightly.

Dowdy is N.C. State’s second commitment for the recruiting class of 2009. He is a 6-3, 215-pound defensive end and outside linebacker.

“I didn’t want to wait and I liked the school and coaches a lot,” Dowdy said. “I didn’t want to wait and get hurt.”

Dowdy can sign the binding national letter of intent in February 2009 as a high-school senior when the NCAA’s next football signing period will begin.

Coach Wayne Jones of High Point Central said that N.C. State was the first college program to offer Dowdy a grant, but other programs were seriously interested in recruiting him.

Jones said that he has been called in the past several days by coaches from Wake Forest, Virginia Tech and Tennessee about Dowdy.

Dowdy played his first varsity season as a junior and had 74 total tackles, 50 of which were solos. He had 13 tackles for losses and 12 sacks.

Dowdy was an all-conference first-team choice. Jones said that Dowdy’s speed over 40 yards is in the 4.6-second range.

Jones said that N.C. State recruited Dowdy to play defensive end because of his height. The N.C. State coaches are hopeful that Dowdy will gain weight in the program.

Dowdy will play both defensive end and outside linebacker as a senior, depending on what defensive alignment High Point Central will be in.

Jones has no doubts that Dowdy will have an outstanding N.C. State career.

“I would say it’s a solid commitment right now because N.C. State has shown him the most interest,” Jones said.

“I mentioned to him that once somebody shows you interest you should take the first train smoking because a lot of times people will offer scholarships and somebody else comes along and takes them. If you don’t take them somebody else will.

“One of the things I told him is I liked what Coach (Tom) O’Brien did at Boston College. His father has influenced him, also. His father likes N.C. State. And Ricky liked the school when he went down there.”

The PP front page has a premium article on Xavier Nixon and his teammate Everett Proctor going on a road trip. I guess it means that they will be visiting State, perhaps for an unofficial visit. Most everyone on here knows about Nixon, the #1 OT in the nation, but few know about Proctor. Proctor received an offer when he visited State on Junior Day weekend.

Hopefully Tom O'Brien will be able to close of the borders and keep other schools from raiding this state of players. We've already got enough trouble with building good teams due to the fact that there are 5 D-IA programs in the state.

It seems that besides Georgia, Virginia will definitely be a mainstay as a key area for our recruiting. We got Glennon for this year. For next year we got Brian Slay to commit, and have offered Zach Thompson (as mentioned above), Mike Privott (who's also mentioned on this page), Clinton Simpkins, and Corey Lillard.

DE Clinton Simpkins seems to like us, and we were the first to offer out of the three offers he holds.

Sucks that the posts from the past few days were lost. Oh well, shit happens.

One guy that's been on an unofficial visit already is TE Paul Carrezola. He has a highlight video on Rivals that you can watch. He looks like he has some pretty good hands in the video. He reportedly holds six offers.

Tight end
Langhorne (PA) Neshaminy

Ht: 6-foot-3
Wt: 252 lbs
Forty: 4.87 secs
Bench max: 290 pounds
Squat max: 560 pounds

Connecticut
Iowa
Northwestern
Rutgers
N.C. State
Pittsburgh
Syracuse
Buffalo

Another player we are recruiting is C Sam Simpson. Scout ranks him as the #1 C and a 3* prospect in the 2009 class.

Offensive center
Lexington (KY) Henry Clay

Ht: 6-foot-4
Wt: 292 lbs

Schools Interested (known offers in italics)
Auburn
Cincinnati
Duke
Kentucky
N.C. State
Purdue
Stanford
Tennessee
Virginia

Wake Forest

Also I wanted to point out that both Slay and Dowdy are on ESPN's 150 Watch List. Let's hope they make it. It'd be a good accomplishment for them.

I'm going to highlight the 5 WRs we have offered in this class.

Starting out below the border is Quintin Payton out of T.L. Hanna High in Anderson, SC. If you've seen the movie radio, T.L. Hanna High is the school in which Radio attends. While we are his first and only offer he's hearing from nearly every ACC and SEC school out there. He's currently on ESPN's 150 Watch List.

Ht: 6-foot-4
Wt: 186 lbs
Forty: 4.49 secs
Bench max: 205 pounds
Vertical: 32 inches

Schools Interested
Clemson
Duke
Georgia Tech
Maryland
N.C. State
South Carolina
Vanderbilt
Wake Forest

Staying in the Palmetto State, Stephon Gilmore is one of the best WRs in the nation. Scout has him as the #31 ranked WR and a 3* prospect, while Rivals has him as a 4* prospect and their Top 250 at #140. He has 4.4 speed. Rivals lists him as an Athlete, which I agree with since he can play both WR and CB. He is on the ESPN 150 Watch List.

Athlete
Rock Hill (SC) South Pointe

Ht: 6-foot-1
Wt: 180 lbs
Forty: 4.4 secs

Schools Interested
Alabama
Clemson
Florida
Florida State
Maryland
N.C. State
Penn State
South Carolina
Tennessee
Wisconsin

(uh oh he might be a NASCAR fan. i guess he'd fit in with our supposed redneck fanbase )

Staying out of state, Justin Brown is another top receiver in the 2009 class and perhaps the best player out of Delaware, a very underrated state for football talent. Scout has him as the #37 ranked WR and a 3* prospect, while Rivals has him as a 4* prospect and in the Rivals Top 250 as the #188 best player in the overall class. ESPN has him in their 150 Watch List.

Wide Receiver
Wilmington (DE) Concord

Ht: 6-foot-4
Wt: 205 lbs
Forty: 4.48 secs
Vertical: 29 inches
Shuttle: 4.34 secs
GPA: 3.8

Schools of Interest
Iowa
Maryland
North Carolina
North Carolina State
Penn State
Pittsburgh
Virginia Tech
Rutgers
Virginia
Ohio State
Miami (FL)

Dude has some huge eyes (the better to see the ball with )

Now for some homegrown talent. Quan Rucker can play on both sides of the ball. He is supposed to have soft hands, which goes great with his 4.45 speed. His coach says, “He makes things look easy. He’s smooth.” Because Quan is such a great athelete, he may be moved to quarterback this season to help out his team though. This may come down to a battle with Clemson and Illinois. Clemson may be the early leader, and Illinois was the first to offer. He's a good kid and we wouldn't have to worry about him qualifying since he has his academics in order.

Wide Receiver
Statesville (NC) West Iredell

Ht: 6-foot-0
Wt: 182 lbs
Forty: 4.45 secs

Schools Interested
Clemson
Illinois
Maryland
N.C. State
Virginia
East Carolina

Jheranie Boyd is perhaps one of the top 5 players in the state. Scout lists him as the #26 WR and a 3* prospect, while Rivals has him as 4* prospect and in their Rivals Top 100 as the #56 best player in the overall class. He is also on the ESPN 150 Watch List. The biggest concern with him is playing time. He doesn't want to be redshirted. Right now he doesn't have any favorites.

Quote :
"There is an awful lot to like about this guy. Boyd has very good size, excellent top end speed and he's a playmaker. He shows very good awareness and feel for the position. Is a sound route runner for a younger player. Has a feel for coverages and is competent versus both zone and man coverage. Plays very hard and works at it. Size is every good, has the frame to really muscle up and he shows very good acceleration and the ability to make something happen after the catch. Reaches top speed quickly, is smooth and fluid both in and out of his cuts and also after the catch. Moves like a smaller wide receiver in terms of quickness and acceleration. He shows excellent body control on the jump ball and the sideline awareness you want downfield. Adjusts extremely well to poorly thrown passes and is always attacking the football-- is a hand catcher, not a body guy. He could develop into a legitimate vertical threat because of his size/speed combination. Shows great confidence in his ability to catch the football whether he is covered or running wide open, his focus is very strong. The thing that is a bit odd about Boyd's running style is that he runs on his heels which gives him an awkward appearance when in the open field. He is not overly physical yet, but he could be because he is tough and he will work the middle of the field, but time in the weightroom will really help him. Overall, Boyd is just a really good football player with good instincts and awareness for the position."

Wide Receiver
Gastonia (NC) Ashbrook

Ht: 6-foot-3
Wt: 180 lbs
Forty: 4.45 secs
Bench max: 260 pounds
Squat max: 495 pounds
Vertical: 44 inches (with that vertical he could catch a lot of jump balls)

Schools Interested
Alabama
Clemson
Florida
Maryland
Miami
Mississippi State
North Carolina
N.C. State
South Carolina
Virginia Tech
Wake Forest

Here's some recently offered players. First off is a guy from surprise surprise, Georgia. That's shaping up to being a nice pipeline for us. This Williams guy defines the term "big ugly". He's supposed to have 6 offers.

Another big ugly recently offered was Taylor Hansen, a local guy from Wake Forest (N.C.) Rolesville High. He's 6-foot-4 and 305 lbs. He grew up a Wolfpack fan.

This WR ended up getting an offer and visited us even though he was originally coming down to visit UNC during their spring game. Good going UNC on canceling your spring game and moving it to Monday. That must have done wonders for your recruiting.

Man I hope we can get a big commitment soon. Last year spoiled me when we where having guys seemingly commit every week or two.

^^^The big dude is from Freddie Aughtry Lindsay's old school (HP Andrews). That guy was a legend, so even though they're well-apart in age, I wouldn't doubt he'd have some influence on him.

So I received my "The Wolfpacker" magazine the other day and I was reading the football recruiting section. Well Jheranie Boyd said that he feels comfortable here and that he likes State. He also said that he hopes to get up to State sometime in the spring and view more of the campus. On Junior Day (which was during the Duke basketball game) the kids are so busy watching the game and touring the football facilities, including the Vaughn Towers, that they don't get to explore the main campus as much as they'd like to. He says he likes our QB Mike Glennon too. Glennon even sent him a text saying that if he plans on coming up to Raleigh again just call him.

I've got to say that I really hope we can land athlete Terry Shankle, who plays on both sides of the ball as a WR and CB. Shankle led the state last year with 15 interceptions .

DE Jason Ankrah says that we are his favorite school. He also said, "that's a top notch program. The facilities are nice and the coaches are just real and up front. It's a good atmosphere to be around." Ankrah also has offers from Illinois, Maryland, Nebraska, Rutgers, Syracuse, and West Virginia.

Ankrah's HS teammate DB Travis Hawkins came to Junior Day with Ankrah. Hawkins said that we had nice facilities and liked the atmosphere at the basketball game. Hawkins also has offers from Florida, Michigan, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Maryland, Penn State, Rutgers, Virginia, Virginia Tech, and West "By God" Virginia. Scout ranks Hawkins as a 4* player and the #10 CB in the 2009 class.

If we land Ankrah, which seems very likely, that may help us land Hawkins.

Now for news that everyone should be interested in. Xavier Nixon says that he will try to narrow his list of schools (currently he has 30 or so offers) to 10 schools by the springtime. He has indicated that NC State will definitely have a fair shot at him.

"They are contenders," Nixon said. "I really like them. C.J. Williams is going there, and he is already getting into my head about going to NC State, talking about NC State a lot."

Nice to see our basketball recruits helping to recruit for our football program. One thing that may factor in, as some of you know, is that both of Nixon's parents are officers in the military.

thanks for the info, it'd be really interesting if we could snag some guys from the northeast. we haven't had that big of a presence there, save a few guys from PA.

^^ Scott is playing it pretty close to the vest right now. He's waiting until he's finished his visits this summer to announce his 4 or 5 favorites.

I've heard we have yet to offer Desmond Scott. For whatever reason our staff isn't that impressed with him.
