and I think my Evo's clutch is starting to slip
and I don't even launch it (well, ok...I've done it like, 3 times or so...and only moderately hard, then).

I just got 200k miles on my 2.8 Z3. Finally the pressure plate has just about given out (it got bad really quick), and my mechanic replaces it on Friday. No slipping on the clutch during the entire 200k. 1/2/2008 10:19:25 AM |

^^ well, it's not me. I've been driving a manual transmission since I was about 13, and this is the 5th car I've had so equipped (including that supercharged S2000 on a stock clutch that was BARELY adequate. If I didn't fry that clutch after 30k miles of my driving--and 65k total miles on the car--I don't think it's me).
Like I said, I've done maybe 3 half-ass launches. I've never tracked or dragged the car. The only other thing I do that accelerates clutch wear a little is downshifting into pretty much every corner--but I almost always heel & toe and match revs.

If it really is slipping don't wait for it to fail or get really bad. The dealer will call it a wear item and try not to cover it under warranty, but if you argue enough they'll do it for you. Especially with such low mileage and what seems like a straight story.

I forgot it was a MitsuBitchey, but I still wouldn't write off the possibility.
I knew a guy with a Wrangler who got a clutch under warranty. It's not like Jeep is known for great customer service.

Ohhh, mother fucker.
Mitsu wants $2300 for a clutch change. Local import shop wants $1700.
Least shitty deal I've found was Clutch Doctors--they'll put in an OEM clutch for $1050, or an Exedy Stage-1 for $1100, and warranty the parts and labor.
What kinda baffles me is that you can rip through the gears at WOT all the way up to triple digit speeds and never get any clutch slip...but if you roll into it at low RPM in 3rd, 4th, or 5th gear, it slips noticeably for a second as soon as the turbo starts to spool. 1/15/2008 7:20:31 PM |

my bikes clutch slips when u clutch it up in a wheelie. it wont catch for a lil bit even after the clutch engaged i guess is the word? but at WOT. it's perfect.
sucks i kno 1/15/2008 7:32:07 PM |

haha, yeah but a bike clutch costs like $100.
mine will slip when the turbo spools in 3-5th gear even if you aren't shifting. if you give it maybe 3/4 throttle or more (enough to spool it some), it'll slip. 1/15/2008 7:38:22 PM |

that's actually very common with any clutch failure, and a main way of testing one.

I see.
Against all odds, I've never managed to destroy a clutch before. The only times I've driven anything with a slipping clutch were vehicles that were already slipping badly before I ever felt it...I've never experienced the early stages (other than my S2000, which would occassionally slip on a hard shift, but that's just because the stock clutch was hanging on for dear life against the supercharger). 1/15/2008 8:21:39 PM |

^^ Evos actually have a limiter that prevents you from launching at more than 5k.
I think they prob deliberately put a limp-wristed clutch in them to keep people from breaking transmissions and T-cases (which they'd have a harder time denying warranty claims for). 1/15/2008 9:28:36 PM |

fucking car has the CEL on now at 22.5k miles.
had autozone read the codes...cylinder misfire. stealership says it's a common problem they've seen before on Evos, and that Mitsu is working on a software patch for the ECU. For the time being, apparently the solution is just to reset the CEL and clear the codes.
and i think i've mentioned before, but the car rattles as much as my 10-year old soft-topped Wrangler did. 2/8/2008 11:33:58 PM |

^^ i can't imagine i drive it much harder than most Evos are subjected to. i've never tracked it, either.
plus, out of all the stuff that's gone wrong, the clutch is the only thing i've really contributed to (and i haven't really been abusive to the clutch...i've done only a few launches, and none of them were full-tilt). well, maybe all of the lateral-g i've twisted the chassis into could be responsible for stuff rattling, but shit, if i'm twisting it up enough to make interior parts loose on the STREET (on street tires), that's a design flaw.
the problem is that it's a piece of shit mitsubishi.
i mean, it's one of (if not THE) most amazing cars i've ever driven, but it's still an awesome driving hunk of shit as far as i'm concerned. 2/9/2008 1:26:42 AM |

pretty much.
Although I've always felt that the 3000GT/Stealth had really solid build quality, especially the 94+ . But that was the most expensive line of cars Mitsu ever made really, and they were all made in Japan.2/9/2008 3:08:23 AM |

the 3000gt was a solidly built car, but it was HEAVY. if it were heavy without being structurally stiff, that would be sad.

^^ yeah, but Evo clutches seem to shit the bed very, very early and often...and it's not just my car. it seems to be pretty much par for the course. they're also expensive to replace.
the CEL isn't that big of a deal. the fact that Mitsu knows about it and hasn't released a fix for it is kinda gay (you could do an aftermarket flash that would take care of it, but then they'd void your warranty...of course, most people with Evos mod their balls off anyway, and why should they care about warranty when Mitsu is probably going to just fuck you out of it anyway?)
and again, i don't abuse the car...i drive it harder than your average housewife, for sure, but nothing that pretty much anyone with an Evo doesn't do. I've done very, very few launches (and the few I've done were half-ass), I haven't tracked it, etc. I've driven other cars I've owned just as hard (if not harder), and haven't had as much trouble--and the Evo is bone-stock and almost brand-new.
If you want one, I can understand buying one even being fully aware of the substantial drawbacks. It's one helluva driving experience...but understand that it's got Mitsubishi written all over it, with all of the negatives entailed (and maybe then some). 2/9/2008 5:09:08 PM |
