This would be fucking marvelous

http://blogs.newsobserver.com/beat/index.php?title=changes_on_the_local_concert_horizon&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1

Quote :
"We might be seeing a step in this direction in downtown Raleigh, where there are tentative plans to put a new concert venue on the site of the old Sir Walter Chevrolet dealership at McDowell and Lenoir streets. For now, it's the construction staging area for the new convention center going up across McDowell Street. But after that's done, the property's natural slope would make a dandy small amphitheater. If all goes according to plan, it will open summer 2009 with a capacity in the 3,000-to-5,000 range. Negotions are underway for Live Nation to operate it and also pick up at least some of the construction costs."

(sorry if this is already somewhere else or in entertainment and I'm blind)

ugh.

so we'll just move the shitty summer outdoor concerts to this?

really, how many venues do we need for washed-up 80s and 90s bands?

[Edited on January 4, 2008 at 6:06 PM. Reason : maybe i'm just too jaded about the live music scene in raleigh]

It's not that this is a particularly bad idea, it's just that outdoor venues suck for rock music. There's no bass response and very little connection between the band and the crowd. If they want to have stuff like they have at the art museum there, that'd work...but who wants to go to an amphitheatre in the middle of downtown when they can go to one that's nestled into the corner of a really cool environment?

nope. it was for a staging area for a parking deck for the convention center. they actually ran a pretty good business and have been looking for a new place to open up.

They lost their lease. The building was bulldozed to make access for a parking lot for a new development, IIRC.

^ what he said.
