her fetus ?
if she did I think it'll be a bad example for teenage girls. or they could spin it and say she had a miscarriage. or she could dig deep marry the guy and be a bright example for Conservatism. 1/7/2008 1:21:17 AM |

I think her having an abortion is a bad example. It would be telling girls that if they have unprotected sex and get pregnant, it's ok! All they have to do is go out and get an abortion. I'd like to see one of these celebrities take the responsible route by having the child and raising it properly. She has the financial resources to do it. The reason teens shouldn't have babies is because they can't raise one. She CAN provide it a home and food and clothes. Ok, yeah, she might not be the best mother. But who really is? You have to learn to apply yourself to learning HOW to be a parent. If she only tried, people would be more supportive. It would also be the best thing she can do for her reputation. 1/7/2008 2:23:52 AM |

Yeah I've got a better example.
She can have the child, prove she's an incompetent mother, hire somebody to take care of the kid, then the kid it turns out isn't taken care of at all by the person she hires (who turns out to be a deadbeat crackhead) then she and the crackhead go to jail for being negligent, and her kid gets taken in by social services.
That would be much more to entertainment tonight's liking. 1/7/2008 2:30:32 AM |

uh if she were going to abort, she would have done so already, and probably would have gotten away with it without anyone finding out. She has absolutely no incentive to announce her pregnancy to the world beyond wanting to actually raise the kid. This greatly jeopardizes her career. She had a reputation before this of being a non threatening teenage girl on Nickelodeon (or was it Disney Channel?). 1/7/2008 3:38:47 AM |

In one of my soc classes we learned that this is idea of "abortions are bad" is construct of United States culture. In many many other cultures folks wouldn't judge a woman one way or another. 1/7/2008 8:31:06 AM |

"rape is bad" is also a construct of United State Culture. Go to Africa and you will see systematic rapings. It is believed to be a man's right.
Just because other cultures view something as "ok" doesn't necessarily make it ok. 1/7/2008 8:36:04 AM |

I agree. Why are American ideals about homosexuality, abortion, and other taboo issues automatically better than another culture's? This is one reason I stay away from organized religion. I'm a strong believer in Christ but I don't appreciate someone who thinks they are holier than me telling me what rules I live my life by. Many of these religious-based taboos that part of our popular culture have no Biblical backing. 1/7/2008 10:27:05 AM |

Some morality is relative. Indians don't eat beef out of respect for the animal. However, some crimes are against humanity and SHOULD be considered universal (although, admittedly, they are not). African tribes who perform female genital mutilation, rape women as a right to me, etc... those are crimes against the very nature of mankind. And for people to cite moral relativism as to excuse this is just as morally repugnant.1/7/2008 10:54:57 AM |

50 million fetuses have been aborted in the US in the past 30 years.
enough to offset the baby boomers retiring and keep the social security system going, as well as many other aspects of our country.
abortion has become a way of birth control, and i feel that is wrong.

I wasn't talking about abortion, but since you bring it up...
If a culture finds something immoral, they make it illegal. Abortion is currently legal, and therefore must not be considered immoral.
The death penalty is a similar example. It's legal here(and practically no where else in the world), so it must be moral here, and immoral everywhere else.
If you disagree with these laws, change them. But at the moment, your views on morality are not supported in this culture.
Incidentally, I never stated my position on either of these issues, but you can curse at me anyway if it makes you feel better. 1/7/2008 11:30:11 AM |

I think most people do, whether they admit it or not. It's definitely the smart thing to do. If you went to Saudi Arabia, you had best cover your body. Not doing so would invite trouble.
As for the death penalty, by my count 133 countries have abolished it, 64 still practice it, but the United States is the only one of those with a "western" culture. A map of these countries clearly illustrates how relative morals are based on location.

morals are based on what is right or wrong.
