i really need some good advice so i apologize for the long entry but i figure some info is required for help.

since ive moved to SC and picked upcharter cable my internet has been much worse than i ever had with roadrunner in charlotte (HS) or raleigh (college). some nights its really laggy, but most nights it appears to perform normally if you are just checking webpages, email etc. the problem is only really apparent if you are using any program utilizing a constant streaming connection (gaming online, vent, ftp, streaming long audio/video files) which is what i am doing most of the time im online.

I get DCd from games multiple times in any given night im playing, and the past few weeks it seems like every 15 mins im losing connection to anything with a constant stream of data flowing...however if i try to reconnect to the vent server, game, ftp server i can do it IMMEDIATELY, causing me to believe there are some bad hiccups or something that are really annoying since certain games i play when you DC you lose and cant reconnect to that specific game after DCing. (sure gaming isnt that important, but I am paying for a service and if its not me id like to resolve it and its affecting my overall internet performance).

It didnt dawn on me until last night when i was trying to DL new drivers for my mobo and network card to see if that helped that it could be packet loss. Over several DL attempts the files kept DL but windows said they were incomplete or corrupt when I tried to open them. checked netstat -s -p tcp in my command prompt and saw that 4% of my packets sent had to be resubmitted (extremely high i would think).

after forcing myself to get a new IP address the packet resubmits was down to like .5% but after a day (when i checked again) was back up to 3%. my 2 week old laptop plugged straight into my modem had only <0.1% packet resubmits all day.

so a few things:

does it seem to other people that packet loss is a very high possibility cause of my desktop's net problems?

if so what kind of things need to be checked. settings? network card? ethernet cable? modem? contact my isp(again)?

any help would be greatly appreciated this has been pissing me off for far too long (ive been here 6 months)

this tells me it's something with the desktop and not the line or the modem. i'd check the drivers first and then try a new/different network card

more than likely one of those two things will cure the issue

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r19571546-HSI-Slow-speeds-in-upstate-SC

Lots of other ppl in upstate SC seem to have the same problem with Charter and the problem is on Charter's end, not yours.

^^ yea im still going to look into that regardless. what does anyone think about lowering my MTU value from the default?

^thanks. most the people posting are from greenville/greer/spartanburg which is exactly where i live. i think i might watch my new laptop a little closer, and try using the internet on that this week and see if i start seeing problems pop up again.

if so i suppose i could try DSL(if its even available) even tho ive never used it before, itd have to be better than this charter's tech support is terrible too.

I dont mean to hijack your thread, but i got an internet connection problem as well, any help would be greatly appreciated. I have TWC with a wireless router. recently my laptop fucked up so i reformatted my hard drive and reinstalled windows and shit. so i thought that was the reason my internet wasnt working. but since i have reinstalled windows, internet works fine at my girlfriends place but still doesnt at my apt. even when i plug my laptop directly into the TWC box it doesnt work. BUT, my roommate has a desktop that he plugs directly into the box and his works fine. any suggestions???oh and also, when i try to "repair" the connection, it says it fails b/c it cannot renew my IP address.

plug your computer into the cablemodem directly, and the reboot the modem.

^^ if you are unplugging an ethernet cable from your desktop and then plugging it straight into your laptop it will not function right and say you have 'limited or no connectivity' and will not repair when you try to do so.

if this is what you are doing, the modem should be powercycled before plugging your laptop in directly after pulling the ethernet from the desktop.

if thats not whats happening then someone else will be better able to assist you
