I am a sophomore who had a pretty terrible freshman year. I gave engineering a try and it basically put me in a huge hole GPA and hours-wise. I then considered something in Management/Business but the 3.0 GPA requirement has shattered that. I have a 2.73 after getting a 3.3 this past fall.

Anyways, I am thinking about going into teaching middle or high school science and also coach basketball (adds salary and I would love it). I am very concerned about the crappy salary a teacher makes but it's something that I think I would really like to do and the benefits/job security is good. Any advise about classes, professors, or anything important about what I am about to go through at NC State and face when I get out - would be much appreciated.

OR, if anybody has a nice success story of a major they chose after being "in the hole" with their GPA - I'd like to hear that. Thanks

I knew a lot of guys from college of Eng that were in this situation. A few of them transferred to CNR, worked hard to get their GPAs up, and then move elsewhere. It sucks that some of the other schools have tough GPA requirements. Kind of a catch 22 for guys in your situation. Some advisers will work with you though. My buddy had a low GPA and he was able to work out a deal where they allowed him to transfer if he got a 3.5 the following semester.

There are some pretty good stories in some other threads on here, just look around a bit. Also try talking with your adviser. If your adviser isn't overly encouraging or you just want another perspective and advice contact the virtual advising center, http://www.ncsu.edu/advising_central/ . They have advisers that you can meet with in person and they are very helpful. Good luck.
