It would basically involve the same types of materials that would be used in a collapsible cup holder. There is more to it than that but that shoudl give a general idea.

I would need to consult an engineer before I could draw it. Of course, I could scratch a very rough drawing down but I really need to consult with someone on it first.

you'd be amazed at how little it takes to file a paper patent.

a verbalization of the concept would probably even suffice.

This thread reminds me to make a call. I was working on a design for a boat part. We were up to making the part, when our carbon fiber guy went MIA. We sort of forgot about it. We could use it, and others with the same boat want to buy it ($$$$). We were going to file for patent or revise the design, based on how the first one performed.
