did i make this before?

a couple months ago or so, i bought a 30 gallon pastic trash container and a can crusher since me and my crew go through lots of canned sodas.

first off, how much approximately would 30 gallons of flattened aluminum cans weigh? and how much is it worth? im just hoping to make enough to pay for the can crusher.

I had 2 great big lawn bags full of uncrushed aluminum cans one time. I took them to the recycling facility and got like $13 for them. You would get more than that, I'd imagine.

I don't know how much 30 gallons of cans weigh...but I do know this.

Here in Rocky Mount they'll buy aluminum for $0.65 per pound.

I weighed one crushed can on my powder scale (accurate as hell) and at $0.65/lb one can is worth $0.017 (1.7 cents).
So... every 12 pack is worth $0.20 in aluminum.

I've seen anywhere from 40 cents to 75 cents recently. I took 5 huge crushed trashbags of cans and got around 35 bucks or so. The shitty part is that most of the places are scap metal yards not just cans, so you will be behind trucks full of shit. It took about 1 hour to get through the lines in the scrap yard where they actually weigh the metal you bring. Then it took another 15 minutes in a different line to cash in my slip.

even crushed there is a lot of air in the container..... it wouldn't weigh more than 80 pounds i would guess, pretty much a shot in the dark tho

i've made about $500 taking aluminum and steel to the scrapyard in goldsboro. aluminum was mostly old rims and boat motor parts. copper cores and tubing brought a lot of money too. i'm sure a couple of trashcans would pay for the crusher.

Just wondering, back in the day I used to see those truck trailers that served as the weigh station/alum. drop off. They'd just back one of those suckers into a grocery store parking lot, keep a guy there during normal hours to weigh your stuff/pay you, and once the trailer was full with their scrap, they'd just take off and put another one in. They still do this?

I have been trying to convince my fucking roommates that we should save our aluminum cans
we have a can crusher... I should just get a trash barrel with a lid and mount the can crusher on the porch near the recycling

but my fucking negative-Nancy roommate keeps telling me that it isn't worth the apparently negligible effort of crushing the can and sorting it by dropping it into an aluminum container

So this one summer when I was working on a tobacco farm with the mexicans as punishment for being a bad teenager I met this old man who drove the tractor. He was an old black man who wore 4 non-functional wrist watches, was usually drunk, and always uncomprehensible, but he did teach me how to make extra money from the aluminum collection people. He would put a little dirt in every one of the cans before he crushed it to add to the weight, apparently they never caught on.

not worth enough...if you fill a 30 gallon bag with uncrushed cans you might get 5 or 10 bucks...if you crush them all you might get 30 bucks but it'll take awhile...i usually just let some homeless dude take them up there and get his own money...you know how i like to kick it with the homeless!

copper is where the money is scrotards, around $2.50-$3.00 a pound depending on the grade, wire is usually worth less than piping, and its not hard to come by

cans are about $.01 - $.02 a piece when recycled, but that value fluctuates on the rate for aluminum.

I thought about doing it for a while, but it wasn't worth the gas (and time) to go to the scrap yard.

I used to collect scrap metal at my old job...here's some metals worth collecting:

Copper = $2.00-3.00/lb - even more for the grade A shiny stuff
Brass = $1.25-2.00/lb
Zinc = $.50-1.00

Alumninum is fetching 65 cents these days? That's almost double what it was a couple years ago.
