"For decades, cameras have been capturing images of a flying, torpedo-like creature so fast it cannot be seen with the naked eye. Some think it is a military weapon; others believe it may be a creature from another dimension known as 'Rods.' Super high-speed photography, physics and even a wind tunnel experiment will be used to shed light on what these images are. One-part history, one-part science and one part monster, discover the truth behind legendary monsters."

This is a pretty good program. And this one about "rods"--no dick jokes, please--has some of the most convincing evidence concerning unexplained phenomena that I've seen. Check it out.

you really think rods are anything other than moving objects (bugs or birds most likely) that are moving too fast for the cameras which took the pictures?

Just watch the show. They have high-quality news camera footage and dozens of images going back to at least 1910. We're not talking fuzzy trashcan-lid UFO images here.

In any event, believe what you want--I'm not trying to convince anybody about the existence of these things. I simply think Monster Quest is a good show.

"On 8th and 9th August 2005, China Central Television (CCTV) aired a two-part documentary about flying rods in China. It reported an incident which happened from May to June of the same year at Tonghua Zhenguo Pharmaceutical Company in Tonghua City, Jilin Province, which debunked the flying rods. ([3]) Surveillance cameras in the facility's compound captured video footage of flying rods identical to those shown in Jose Escamilla's video. Getting no satisfactory answer to the phenomenon, the curious research staff of the facility, being scientists, decided that they would try to solve the mystery by attempting to catch these airborne creatures. Huge nets were set up and the same surveillance cameras then captured images of rods flying into the trap. When the nets were inspected, the "rods" were no more than regular moths and other ordinary flying insects. Subsequent investigations proved that the appearance of flying rods on video was an optical illusion created by the slower recording speed of the camera (done to save video space). This is the empirical evidence, showing that the "rods" themselves can be captured, and that they do indeed prove to be ordinary animals."

Dear TWC,

Where is my HCHD?

Watched this last night. Was interesting but followed the standard format for these kinds of shows:
First 5 min - "OMG WTF!!??"
Next 50 min - drawn out, less dramatic "WTF??"
Last 5 min - "Haha, dumbasses"

that said, i'm a sucker for them

of all the crazy shit you can believe in (ufos, bigfoot, other random things), believing in the existence of rods is just...... well...... stupid. They aren't real. They are camera anomalies. That show even said as much. Frankly, the whole rods thing gives all the other unexplained phenomenon groups a bad name.

There's always a group of "others" that believe everything is from some other dimension. It's like they have a reverse Occam's razor principle deeply rooted in their brain. Macco's razor?

umm... there are giant squid

apparently (just learned this)... it's called the Colossal Squid (Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colossal_squid

note... actually there are other giant squid of the Architeuthidae family as well,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giant_squid

very cool

Ummm, no. The monster quest giant squid is looking for fucking Kraken. Like dquid big enough to attack ships.

This show is actually pretty damn good, even scientifically, until they hit the rods episode. Rods are an easily and often debunked phenomena and they didn't try very hard to debunk it. That episode was complete shit and made me angry.

The rest of them rock....they do a fair job of representing both sides and sorta trying to debunk things.

i forget the long ass name of the squid they were trying to find, but at the very end they caught a shot of a tentacle that a couple of different guys i think estimated to be 100 feet long or so. thats some shit i think is really out there

kraken and giant squid are two totally different things

i'm not watching this stupid show, so I only have what is said here to go on

but people did not have conclusive proof that giant squid existed until very recently

this is a link to a message board talking about that episode

http://www.unexplained-mysteries.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=111340

Quote :
"I just finished finished watching Monster Quest on the History Channel and let me tell you, it was great! It The creature caught was very large, at least compared to the 5 foot long squid with the camera. Comparing the length from center of the tentacles to the eye (you can see the eye shining) it was estimated to be I think....60 feet? I'm not sure, first they said 60 feet, than they said 100 feet, it confused me a bit. But you can definitley tell that this was a big squid."

Quote :
"They could not tell what species of squid it was so the two estimates are based on two different species of squid. The first estimate of 60 ft is the estimated length if it was a Humboldt Squid. The second estimate was 108 ft, which is the estimated total length if it was a Giant Squid. The arms of this squid (whatever species) were estimated to be a whopping 18 inches in diameter!"

so apparently i'm not the only one

Exactly. And I know that the Giant squid and Kraken are different...i mean something of kraken proportions.

Basically, you came into here trying to tell us something about the giant squid, which apparently, you know dick about. Then you act like you can talk about the show without having watched it?

C'mon man.

Because you came in here acting like you were going to teach us something with your newfound wiki knowledge about giant squid.

And actually, my first comment was mostly about the show and a brief review, so don't flatter yourself.

I feel like they did most of the good investigations early on in the season, and now they're out of good things to cover. We will see...

no, i already knew about the basics of the recent discovery of proof for the giant squid

i was presenting additional information for other's edification

because I decided to spend a few minutes and look up some new stuff for myself and decided to share with others

instead of just waltzing into a thread and start being a complete dick

^ If you don't like Monster Quest, you claim you aren't watching it, and you think it presents a bunch of "debunked sillyness [sic]," why do you continue to post in this thread? Because you're trying to be an annoying troll asshole, maybe?

GTFO.

Yeah, I suppose it's ridiculous to think there are creatures that all-knowing humans don't know about. The continual discovery of numerous new species, however, throws a rather large monkey wrench into the gears of that type of thinking--not to mention the many areas of our physical world that have not been fully explored or explored at all.

The following are just the new species that were found in some California caves in 2006:

27 Unknown Creatures Found in California Caves

Quote :
"KINGS CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Calif. (AP) - Spiders, centipedes and scorpion-like critters are among the 27 new animal species that biologists have discovered in the dark, damp caves of two Central California national parks, officials announced Tuesday."
