Prequel, and final enstallment of the Lonesome Dove story. Started last night on CBS.

For those of you that know about Lonesome Dove, Steve Zahn plays a young Gus McCrae (Robert Duvall) and I thought he has done a pretty damn good job recreating the Gus that Duvall made famous. Of course he is no Duvall, on any level, but as far as giving this character what it deserves he has done a very good job.

Karl Urban stars as Woodrow Call (Tommy Lee Jones), he's not bad but it felt like he was almost trying too hard to be tight lipped like Tommy Lee did in the original.

Val Kilmer plays a new character, Captain Scull who gets taken prisoner by an outlaw leader...Val recreates another character along the lines of his Doc Holiday with strange mannerisms and eccentric insight to every issue. Definitely ready to see how he plays out.

Parts 2 and 3 air Tuesday and Wednesday night at 9.

I may have to dig out Lonesome Dove and watch it again once this ends.

I love LD too, that's why I actually put The Wire on the backburner to watch this.

I read a couple reviews this morning after i made this thread and was disappointed how they rated this show. I dont expect it to win any awards, become an instant classic, or replace the original. If anyone did they'd be ignorant. I think it will do the series justice though.

I'll catch the wire tonight so its all good.

Overall, I give them a B+...and a lot of that is for effort. They really try to do the series justice, and it shows with the casting and sets.

But some of the show is just plain bad...for example, Scull getting captured by the two people throwing a couple of bolas. That shit was so bad, it looked like a bad Sci-Fi movie.

And a few of the actors/actresses are very B movie-ish.

Steve Zahn is the highlight of the show, and Karl Urban is serviceable, but obviously not quite up to par. The women with the exception of Mrs. Scull are good.

I think the entire Scull plotline is way too out there. Scull is dumb, his wife is outrageous and doesn't fit...the whole thing seems to come out of left field based on LD.

My only other real complaint would be that they may be trying too damn hard to recreate and give nods to LD. I feel like we're watching LOTR:Return of the King and Frodo just wakes up and they show you all the characters, just one last time, come through the door and smile.

Blue Duck, Jake, Deets, Maggie...it's all a bit much to cram into the opener.

^i agree, and i think part of that is due to the fact that the novel comanche moon, although a prequel, was the last book written in the LD series. So the author had things he wanted to answer for the readers and thus the miniseries is trying to answer some of the same things for people that only watched Lonesome Dove. Things like

why doesn't Call claim Newt?
why didn't gus ever settle down with clara?
why is there so much hatred between Blue Duck and Call/McCrae

I liked the small details giving nods to LD. Seeing a younger version of Danny Glover's Deetz with the same costuming. Same with younger versions of the rest of the hat creek group, small details like the hats and accessories they wore, especially Jake Spoon
