2000'ish/Ford Explorer/V-8 Full-Time 4x

So my roommate was doing some doughnuts in a snow cover parking lot in boone and hit a curb with the right front tire. hit hard enough to break a section of the rim off at the bead but i dont know at what kind of angle he hit it at. Now the under acceleration there is a fairly loud popping noise coming from that area. He says it has also made several rapid pops during a u-turn. Ive ridden in the vehicle since then and its definitely in that area and carrying though the rest of the drive train. I dont really have any experience with IFS but Id say its that side cv axle, agree? I did crawl under it and give it a good shake but there was no excessive slop like i thought there might have been. Anything else this might be or I should look at?
Also i know its kinda a big deal but how long can you really drive on a busted cv, I mean mexicans do it all the time but....theyre mexicans. I highly doubt hes gonna want to drop the $ to replace it right away.

if it makes the popping sound on the right side when you turn left it could be your cv joint. i don't know what it would be if you just hear a popping sound when accelerating, but my car does the same thing when i accelerate and turn. i know it has a bad cv joint. it's not too terrible to drive on a busted one (minus the annoying popping) but after a while it could damage your axle.
