and my grad school application has to be in by Feb. 15th... it takes 10-15 days to get your scores from ETS

so, what would you guys consider to be a decent GRE score?

so far my practice test scores have been 1040 and 1080 (without the writing sections which I'm sure I will do very well on)

for engineering as long as you did well on the math >750 you were good because thats all that matters

i would imagine that the reverse is true for you and as long as you do >700 on verbal and great on the writing you should be fine

over 1200 is decent


Also like the poster said above the section score is very important. If you're going into the humanities you will want to get as high as possible on verbal and writing. Sciences want high in the math section. Social Sciences often like a balance with scores in the 600's on both sections (preferably the mid 600's) along with a good writing score.

Also, remember this only a small piece of the entire application process if your scores don't come out good. We have plenty of students that had average scores (with other stronger parts in there application) that our currently in our program.

my practice scores have broken down like so:

1st test
Verbal: 550
Quant: 490

2nd test
Verbal: 570
Quant: 510

I hear that the practice tests are harder than the real thing so I'm hoping my real score will be higher. I suppose more practice/studying won't hurt but damn if I don't want to get this out of the way.

What practice tests are you taking?

The Kaplan CD ones were about 200 below my actual score, the GRE cd was about 80 less.

I took it in Nov. before I applied to avoid the last minute stress while filling out apps. I thought I'd take it twice but did well enough the first time a repeat would have been pointless. If you are getting below 600 in math on the practice tests I'd say don't waste your money applying to engineering grad school unless you know someone. Of the 11 people in my class and major about half of us that took the GRE got an 800 on the math. I suspect the others went out drinking the night before.

I'm doing the Princeton Review tests and using the book Cracking The GRE

I'm not an engineer and I won't be applying to an engineering grad program
I'm a literature major and I'm applying to a Media Studies grad program

okay, you're an engish major. No idea what good scores are for that, but I think my engineering friends did about the same as you on the verbal. You'll need a 5.5 or 6.0 on the analytical writing I'm guessing. That's the top 15% or so. Just look at what % of applicants the program accepts, and figure that you need to be in that range on the test, since GRE isn't everything but the %ages are a combo of all majors.

I think I'll do fairly well on the analytical writing

and when it comes down to actually doing the test I'll do better on all fronts because I'll be focused

I was eating dinner, talking to people and I even took a phone call during my second try and I still made a 40 point improvement

i wasn't ready for mine... but i got a 1200 and the college was happy with that i guess.
but i'm also in a field that isn't leaning toward math or verbal. it's all science, which wasn't part of my test.
