When NC 12 runs out and it's strictly beach there at the end of the Corolla, what is left? I unfortunately have never been able to do this because I don't have a 4 wheel drive to get on the beach but I was wondering what is there on the beach as you approach VA? Is there a gate there loaded with signs that locks you out? Anybody ever been up that far? What is there that prevents you from crossing over there? Perhaps some native OBXers or people that have traveled there know?

There are a series of poles in the ground, about the size of pier supports, that prevent you from driving any further. So no, you can't get to Va from NC on the Outer Banks.

once you got about 5 or so miles after Hwy 12 ends (on sand), there is a fence that stops you from entering a wildlife refuge. you can't get to Va. on the banks. Carova is the last place you get to. Very interesting to explore.

You have to have a permit to drive between Carova and Sandbridge. It's gated.

Yeah, it seems like i read that when i was a kid in a national geo but i couldn't remember! It was eating at me this past summer when I was there because I couldn't get out there to see with my own two eyes ! It's nice they are looking out for nature but it sucks for those that wanna go from the OBX to Virginia Beach. Really got to go all the way around your ass! Fence, huh? We talking like barbed wire or a flimsy piece of tin like thats out between the US/Mexican border ?

You have roughly 11 miles of beach to drive on before you run into the state line. Only a handful of long time residents of the Carova area have keys to the gate that is at the state line.

this summer? I'll be one of the locals cussing you out as I drive by.

Let the air out of your tires. Get them to at least 20psi, 15 preferred. Don't crawl along. Keep going at least 20mph unless you are right next to people or horses. Don't park right in the main set of tracks near the water or up by the dune line. Tracks = lanes. Don't be a jackass and go swerving all over the place and never move out of the way if someone else is coming and you have the easier path around them. You ARE allowed to run over idiots who are playing horse shoes or set up their beach chairs right in the obvious path of vehicles. Extra points if they are from New Jersey.

And if you get stuck and are forced to call a tow truck, it could cost you 150-250 bucks to get out, depending on if you just need a jerk out of the hole you made or if you need to be towed back to pavement.

Fuckeys are worth slighly less than Jerseyites.

The ones worth the most points are Jerseyites who've relocated to Florida, but still carry the attitude.

Well, I'm from Maine, but trust me, we hate the tourists just as much back home. I love the NC coast almost as much as the Maine coast.
