posted this in the ps3 thread, but im trying to get feedback quick so i can try to swap routers.

I bought a linksys G router and hooked it all up. i was having problems with connectivity. my online would connect with ps3, but when i exited the game it would kick us off our laptops and pretty much kill the connectivity of the house.
so i would have to unplug/replug the router and bam, everything works perfect... until i get to playing again.

and i was getting NAT type 3

so i read that i needed to assign ports to the router. and i did. i followed http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Linksys/WRT54G/PlayStation_Network.htm
instructions on assigning the ports. and i also enabled DMZ.

so now im getting NAT type 2 and i could play my games and they would be able to connect to online, but i keep getting kicked off playstation network if i go look for demos.

so i disabled the port forewarding because i read that all i needed to do was enable DMZ.

still not working.

i get NAT type 2. but no PSN access. and we dont get kicked off internet now when i quit the games.

ive read that D-link is a better router because a lot have complained about linksys issues.

what do you guys run?

and its not even actual "online" gaming. when i play solo it just connects to EA servers and whatnot, so its doing some online activity.

i have til Feb. 8th to goto tiger direct and swap routers.

There is a known issue b/w PS3s and (some) Linksys routers. Don't know anymore details.

I have a Linksys WRT54G v1.2 i think. the older "better" one.

everything hooked up using WPA w/o a hitch. 100% signal, no drop outs.

i love this router

so maybe look for one of these used or something.

It might not be the issue you are experiencing but in the past I'd have problems with one out of every four or five linksys routers. The typical scenario was...

They would work fine for a while, then it would drop all connections - wireless or plugged directly in. A quick reset would get things working again but the time between resets would gradually increase. Sometimes flashing the bios would help to increase the time between needed resets, sometimes I got a partial flash that bricked the unit because the connection dropped out in the middle of the flash. Bad units would typically get to the point of no longer being useful in just a few months time.

The other linksys routers (purchased at the same time) lasted for years without any issues whatsoever. I don't know if they have gotten to the point of having a better track record over the years.

Many linksys routers choke out with torrents. You have to reset the router to clear connection history when it gets too large for memory. They supposedly fixed this, but that depends a lot on which version of the router/firmware you get.

this is a brand new one. bought on Jan. 8th.

im def. going to give D link a try. i mean there has to be a better one out there.

I just got my roommates PS2 working online with our linksys.

If you have done the DMZ make sure you have to the right IP address that the PS3 has (DCHP Clients table.. check it)

Anyway, if you have done all that right then it's probably your router.

1. Update for the firmware for it.
2. Go buy a new one.

got the d-link hooked up

first connection try was a success.

so far so good
