Check out the Westboro Baptist Church on Wikipedia, this is probably one of their least offensive protests. That website is real, and if you can stomach some of that shit on there, it's absolutely mind-blowing at how serious and fucked up this group is. 1/23/2008 11:02:23 AM |

These are basically two families who have their own unaffiliated "Baptist" church that they started when pops the preacher got kicked out of Eastside Baptist church back in 55. They have turned into a fucking cult of lawyers who love to start trouble and get their name in the news. They spend a shitload of money (200k+) a year travelling around prostesting military funerals, AIDS patient funerals, movies that portray homosexuals positively, theater (because you know its a lot of gays in the theater), etc. They hate the USA, Jews, Christians, Muslims, and basically everybody else that is not them.

Quote : | "Friends and family filled a Lutheran church Tuesday to remember four children and a young mother killed in an Ohio interstate crash.
"Bethany, Haley, Vadie, Lacie, Jordan. You will not be forgotten!" the message board outside Saint Luke Lutheran Church read as they filed into the church under sunny skies.
Bethany Griffin, 36, of Parkville, and three of her daughters - Vadi Griffin, 2 months; Lacie Burkman, 7; and Haley Burkman, 10 - died in the crash along with Jordan Griffin, 10, the daughter of Bethany Griffin's husband, Danny Griffin Jr., 36.
Danny Griffin was injured in the accident, along with 8-year-old Sydney Griffin, who was released released from a hospital on Monday. The family said that she has steadily improved.
Michael Gagnon, of Adrian, Mich., faces five counts of aggravated vehicular homicide in the Dec. 30 crash on I-280 in Toledo.
Investigators said after the crash that Gagnon's blood-alcohol level was more than three times the legal limit when he drove the wrong way on Interstate 280 in Toledo and slammed his pickup truck into the family's minivan.
Maureen Gloria, a neighbor of the Griffin's, described the memorial "as a beautiful, beautiful ceremony" that involved not only family but neighbors and classmates of the children.
"They're really not leaving anybody out. You know there's so many between family, friends, and kids going through a lot," Gloria said.
The family wanted to "make everybody feel welcome," said Gloria, who attended with her husband Paul.
Many planned to wear blue, which was Bethany's favorite color, the church said on its Web site. Three funds have also been established to help the family by the church, Carney Elementary School, and the Maryland chapter of Mother's Against Drunk Driving.
Kim Haney of Edgemere, whose sister was married to Bethany's brother, said the young mother's brothers and sisters gave long eulogies consisting of "mostly memories" about their childhood and "good times growing up."
The memorial service also included some uninvited guests outside the service.
Three members of the Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church, known for protests at military funerals, demonstrated about a block from St. Luke Evangelical Lutheran Church.
The demonstrators said that the deaths are God's retribution against the community for a recent $11 million jury award against the Kansas group. A federal jury in Baltimore made the award in October to Albert Snyder, of York, Pa., who sued after the group protested his son's military funeral in Maryland.
Demonstrator Fred Phelps said the community is going to "pay the price" for persecuting his group for preaching the word of God." |

You know, this world is full of crazy people. These people being some of the most hateful and crazy. They are at least high on the list.
Even in law school, there are people that are just as crazy as these Westboro nuts but along the liberal lines. There is absolutely no differing opinions allowed here and that is a bad sign since it is a law school and seeing both sides of the coin is supposed to be our stock and trade.
It's so hard to find anyone that can be reasonable in general.

why? because they think that homosexuality is a bad thing? they aren't hurting anyone...in fact, you're the one touting violence
i don't know if you're an atheist or what, but this is what i find amusing: religions that have extreme prejudices are considered examples of why religions are awful and horrible, but atheists who hate them for their views are perfectly fine...that's just retarded
that said, i'm a fairly devout christian who's okay with homosexuality and i agree that those people are whackjobs...just try to refrain from the hypocrisy, okay? i know i try to

duh obviously i said i was advocating violence. and no, it isn't because of homosexuality (NOTE HOW I SAID IT WASN'T JUST BECAUSE OF THE HEATH LEDGER THING). they picket tons of peoples funerals; people who have nothing to do with homosexuality have had their funerals picketed because their deaths are apparently gods way of showing how sinful america is. blah blah blah. they don't just picket people directly involved with homosexuality.
they aren't hurting anyone? pretty sure they're hurting the parents/siblings/loved ones at the funerals they picket. but i mean, who knows right?
and clearly i stated in my post that i was being hypocritical. and on a side note, hypocrisy probably isn't something to bring up if you are going to open the doors for a discussion about religion.
and no, i'm not an athiest.
and on another side not, as with most things in chit chat, my post wasn't 100% serious. i just think they're horrible people. clearly i'm not going to hunt them down and murder them. and i don't just think they're horrible for thinking homosexuality is a sin. but that is irrelevant because you see, the funny thing about opinions is, i can think whatever i want to, since it is MY opinion.

I'm all for intolerance of hatred. I don't hate them for their view, but i don't believe that the concept of tolerance is absolute. I believe they have a right to have their view and express it. I don't believe that they have the right to impose it upon people. Going to a public park and preaching it is one thing, there are other parks in the world that I can go to to avoid it.
If my son is being buried and they post up near the church, I don't exactly have any other options for where i should go to have the funeral.
I've heard of military families around there actually announcing FALSE locations for the funeral to avoid having those people show up. When we've reached that point, we have to realize that those people are doing nothing but causing problems.
Rather than violence, i vote that someone gets a huge banner and just spreads it across in front of them to block their shit from view. Hell I would help hold it up. 1/23/2008 12:30:52 PM |
