And please play Marques the whole time and keep Javi out.

I had rather see Harris or Ferguson in than Javi.

Javi is really not that bad, he is hustling like a champ tonight. I think we have seen what Gonzalez can really do once he gets a little confidence

This is all the time. You guys are crazy. Javi sucks. He will never belong in the ACC.

I will guarantee you that we outscored them tonight when Johnson was in over Javi. When Javi came in, we would blow our lead.

REMEMBER OUR TEAM ONLY HAS 4 PLAYERS WHEN JAVI OR MARQUES ARE IN.

Javi's three touch is improving and that's going to help his confidence over time, not to mention the two or three times he drove all the way to the basket and scored...

in the end game situation he still made a lot of freshman mistakes, did not hustle down the court like he needed to, and was waiting for the offense to produce a pass for him...

but Johnson is no better in any area than Javi, and Javi is actually improving things

I'm not even sure Johnson can dribble with his left hand yet. Neither one of them are ACC caliber PG's

They can't create space between them and their defender
They can't create their own shot
And when they do shoot, it's almost always a miss

Javi played as well as you can expect. It was great to see him take it to the rack and actually make layups. In our situation, the vets have to play better. There is definite improvement

Costner is a much bigger problem since he should be doing much more. I think we have to start mccauley (passing, rebounding) and horner (shooting, hustle) over him. Costner is where the improvement needs to come from, if it ever does.

And I have to agree with the thread title -- we need to run way more plays through fells.

If Fells ever developed the fire and relentlessness that Julius Hodge had, he could be All-ACC. He's just too soft and settles for 3's instead of wanting to drive to the hole. He's got the perfect blend of speed, size and athleticism, plus they have to respect his shooting ability. I don't know if Lowe can get that out of him though. Maybe his senior year.

Well, he doesn't have the ball handling ability to take it to the rack as hodge did. However, that's something that is easily learned if he applies himself.

^^^look here is the thing, its all a matter if you blame someone for not having skill

javi and johnson just suck. sometimes they try hard, sometimes they don't, sometimes you can even pay attention, but even if they were all out we wouldn't be much better b/c they suck

costner shows up in people's minds more b/c they know he has talent and he is obv just not trying

as for mccauley, he hasnt been in games enough to "show up," he has played well and hard when he is in. he doesnt score as much b/c hickson takes up that post spot.

Are you serious? He's good, but he seems like a 4-year kind of player as far as how long it takes him to develop an all around game.

Imagine if Courtney could fake his shot, drive to the basket, rise up and absolutely yam on somebody. When was the last time you saw that from him? He has that ability but his game just doesn't seem complete like it could be.

Fells needs to be more active on offense. The one thing he doesn't do is penetrate. He's more than capable of doing it, and he would be a big help at the foul line.

Nobody on this team can break down anyone off the dribble. Fells looks like he can but doesnt. wtf

no shit.

man, did you see costner try to drive in the 2nd half and end up putting the ball halfway on his show and on the GT guy's lap right under the basket?

what the hell happened to his "step" he was sporting in the ACC tourney last year?

It's like trying to watch Vinny T try trying escape the pocket this year...

after this much of the season, i would too. that wasn't the case last year (although it wasn't an issue, because they both played). i just felt more comfortable with costner last year... this year, mccauley has played better.

Reflecting back on last night, seeing it in person:

Thoughts I had and I'm sure everyone else has already mentioned:

1) Fells is sick.
2) Costner is invisible to be as big as he is, cept when he's bobbling passes.
3) Why do our PGs constantly dribble into trouble and pick up the ball?
4) We start WAY too far from the basket.
5) We don't push the ball, ever.
6) We don't press enough, and when we do, we're horrible.
7) I'm more confident in Javi's shot than Marques'.
8) I think they feel the same way (#7).
9) McCauley has more basketball IQ than the rest of the team put together.
10) Hickson isn't ACC-ready. Forget about the NBA.
11) Javi's last shot was gut-wrenchingly bad.
12) We're just not a good basketball team.

I agree with 1, 2, 5, 6, 9, 11, and 12 completely.

i think we don't push the ball because of a lack of percieved depth. we could regularly play marques, javi, trevor, and so on... but we don't. and i'm certainly not more confident in javi's shot then marques' unless he's shooting layups. my question to sid is why doesn't tracy smith play a little more? he seems like a decent player. atleast he's not afraid to go to the basket. i can't really tell though because he's only put in significant (10+) minutes in one game.

i would say i agree with 10, but i think hickson is ready, he just wasn't prepared... if that makes sense. he can play with anyone in the league at his position, but he wasn't mentally prepared. i think he's starting to see acc competition just isn't the same as the western carolina's and the william and mary's.

jj's defense around the basket has improved a good bit in the past week or so. his footwork is much better and people can't just spin around him every damn play.

that's true. now if he could just block 2 or 3 more shots per game we'd have a formidable force inside on defense.

Another thing from last night...

The officiating in the second half was really strange in the final 10 minutes. I felt like we were in control and then there were some really weird calls that seemed to put us so far back. Even in the end when calls went our way (e.g., Hickson charge no-call), it didn't matter. The Causey foul (where he pushed/shoved with his elbow, went up clean and we were whistled) was magical. I don't know what the official saw. The no-call travel on the dunk. Dude ran twenty feet. It just all seemed to demoralize the team. Seriously interesting officiating.

i think Fells really stepped up the last 4 or so games
other than that, he is very inconsistent

when Fells comes in focused he plays at a very high level....we need him to continue to play that way the rest of the season.

and the talk about him going pro...i hope that was a joke b/c there is no way he will make to the next level this year. He will have to improve 10 fold to be able to get drafted next year. IMO he will be playing in European ACC league
