you want some free money?

To stimulate the U.S. economy, the government will offer tax rebate checks of $600 per individual and $1,200 per couple, sources said.

they won't do it

they'll tell people they are so they will spend the money before they get their check. then they'll take said money and spend it on blowing up iraq

I would rather them just subtract that from our taxes owed for this year.

So will this $600 be taxed?

If I earn $1 more this year I'll be bumped into the next tax bracket.

^^^only for that one extra dollar

taxes are paid in tiered rates based on income amount

so you dont suddenly owe the extra percentage on your entire income, just the extra dollar

Whatever....like you fucking knew that.

It's pretty clear you were worried about the old fashioned "bump" into the next tax bracket.

So is this for real? Tentatively is never a good word when the government uses it.

Money is cool so I'd holler.

so which is it? 600 or 1200?

you read one and it sounds like 600 for couple (300 each for working persons)

you read the other and it says 1200 for couples

wtf

It's in the beginning stages of being talked about and a whole bunch of powerful people are bitching about it already.

I won't believe it until there are written instructions on how to get it, even then it'll get lost in the mail, conveniently!!!

Uhm

Your health insurance and tax dependency are (should be) unrelated.

Have they provided more than half your support for 2007?

98% of this website doesn't economically deserve a rebate.

I don't think $300 is gonna boost spending.

I think everyone with a subprime mortgage will put it toward their house payment, everyone with a ton of credit card debt might toss it at that. People that don't have enough money are not gonna get $300 and be like "OMG LETZ ME SPENDZOR THIS MONEY TO BOOST THE ECONOMIEZ".....A thousand maybe would get splurged on something, $300 is just a drop in the bucket.

i think you underestimate america's love of shopping.

...and $300 is a lot of money for some people.

^^^The average American doesn't think that way.

You're right in that that's what they SHOULD do with it. Most won't and may actually end up using it as a means for acquiring even more debt (part of car down payment, etc.). We're spenders by nature.

fuck

and I suppose situations where I earned less than $600 from a single "employer" don't count as taxable income and wouldn't be considered in this situation?

I need to pad my income

The number I saw was 3K.

I made 6738 from working last year, IIRC.

Snewf, grants and scholarships in excess of tuition and fees count towards your income.

Sweet I'm in line for the full $1200 then! Holla!

Seriously we are just going to put this on student loans. We only owe for three things in this world, our house and both of our student loans, and I would be fucking ecstatic if I could get one of the loans finished off with this money.

Yeah, there are a lot of numbers being thrown around. Still nothing official. And what she said about excess monies is true as far as I know.
