We have a hole in the hallway that was caused by my brother jumping on my back one night and me ramming him backwards into the wall. It is basically the outline of someone's back so it is pretty big. Our douche bag apartment maintenance crew saw it today and we got a letter saying they said they are going to fix it themselves and we dont have any other option.

their gonna over charge the shit out of you... typically you can fix this for less than 40 on your own, expect 40 to be their hourly rate charge which will include the time it takes for the mud to dry and the paint to dry...

I'd fix it (by myself or using a contractor of my choice) with the quickness and tell them to screw themselves. Patching sheetrock is not hard. The sheetrock, tape, and mud will be like $20 bucks at Lowes. Any handyman can probably replace the sheet, tape it, and mud it in 30 minutes if you don't want to do it yourself. It'll take a second trip out for him to sand the mud and paint, but you can definitely do that even if you don't feel comfortable patching the sheetrock.
They are going to try to burn you on this. You can tell by the fact that they won't let you hire your own person to do the work. I would make a stand if I were in your shoes. 1/24/2008 2:21:52 PM |

I'm not saying it's hard to fix some broke gypsum, but it is hard to make it look good (specially considering the size and whatever the placement of the hole is), which will be their argument as to why they want it done by someone they deem as credible.

You could fix it yourself for less than $60 garunteed.
The APT. is going to screw you and probably keep your deposit, and charge you another $200.

Same shit happened to me. They "charged" me 800$ for two fist shaped holes in the wall. I got 2 estimates and went to the NCSU legal aid office. They can't charge you more than the rate that you get out of some insurance book that is published every year, that dictates labor rates and material costs for every repair in the world. My sister fell down the stairs one time in her townhouse in college and spilled grape juice all over the walls...and they charged her to repaint the entire wall of the stairs instead of like a few spots where the paint had been stained... It was white paint... and long story short, it was almost $600.00
She could have done it herself...
