Went to wake tech for the summer and got Nurse Aide I certification so I can get clinical hours for Physician Assistant school. Trouble is, applying to these hospitals has been rough. Rex has turned me down on four different jobs and after weeks of calling and a family friend checking, they told me they require one year of experience to work there (surprising considering the high turnover rate for NAs). Duke Health Raleigh and Wake Med have kept me under "recruitment review" for over a month and won't tell me anything on the phone. Any Nurse Aides out there who can give me a pointer or two? 1/24/2008 6:06:29 PM |

is it possible to get an internship/volunteer for experience? 1/24/2008 6:08:10 PM |

I can't get the hands on patient experience as a volunteer because volunteers are legally not allowed to do enough. Plus, if I take this job, I have to leave my other one...so I need to get paid. 1/24/2008 6:09:36 PM |

this is why I gave up on PA school
They practically expect you to get a whole other job (Nurse, EMT, Paramedic, Rad-tech) which requires more school. And THEN....maybe they'll let you become a PA 1/24/2008 6:18:38 PM |

how far are you willing to drive? i would think the outlying hospitals, eg franklin regional, would be a little less picky 1/24/2008 6:20:46 PM |

Hey there, I was in the same position. Instead of becoming a nurse's aid, I took a job with a company specializing in group home care of the developmentally disabled...http://www.rsi-nc.org. I was able to get in house training, direct patient care experience, and over 1800 hours of clinical experience. It's not an awesome job by anymeans, but it certainly will test your grit. Besides that, it's pretty awesome knowing at the end of the day that you positively impacted someone's life.
The company is based out of Chapel Hill. It's not a bad place to work at and the benefits are pretty solid. Send a pm if you'd like more info. 1/24/2008 6:48:27 PM |

first, you need to get your CNA II certification
CNA Is are a dime a dozen
a CNAII is far more useful and far more valuable to have around.
as a CNAI all you are going to be able to do is home health aid stuff and you get to be a sitter for people on suicide watches and crazy as neuro patients
being a sitter is boring as hell, and really aggravating if you have to sit with a crazy ass neuro patient
try a home health agency
maxim is one
try IOP at duke
nurse recruitment is in parking garage 1 on the RT level
honestly i would go to nursing school and then be an NP
rather than being a physicians assistant working under their license
as an NP you are an independent practicioner, you have a fair amount of autonomy in your practice, however if you fuck up it is your ass.
duke has a good ACNP program, our NPs are responsible for the overnight medical/neurological management of the patients on my unit.
they are also instructors in the ACNP program at Duke 1/26/2008 6:45:00 PM |
