I was an "independent contractor" a couple years back in which case i was supposed to pay in quarterly or end of year- I never did so nor filed end of the year... Have not filed not had any "stated" income since 2002 with the exception of this period in time-

Wondering if I am going to file and get a big surprise and how to find out if I do owe money-

i forgot to file one of my W2s for some freelance work i did in 2005. the irs didn't catch it until a few months ago. just sucks now b/c i'm back in school can't pay the taxes off quickly.

you probably want to go ahead and contact the irs about that; they charge interest from the time your payment would've been due.

Well i guess thats my issue- I have a pretty diesel refund do this year and although it will suck if i call to ask- they notice it- i get nothing this year as opposed to taking a shot and hoping i get shit back -lol

god damn some of you people are dumb

just because you dont pay taxes and didnt get caught THAT YEAR doesn't mean you slipped through the cracks (mostly referring to dnl here)

just wait until the irs catches up and you'll pay years of interest on the money you never paid

looking forward to the thread "OMG I OWE IRS x YEARS OF INTEREST on $x"

i'm shocked most of you people are functional enough to get yourself out of bed, dressed and fed everyday. even then i'm probably giving too much credit

I burned my birth certificate and social security card. I don't have to pay taxes.

^^^ I realize that it needs to be paid back-(although it had slipped my mind until now) My issue is that considering the amount I would owe I would prefer to set up an installment deal as opposed to dropping it all in one shot-

In which case it would be nice to know if they are going to keep all my refund this year or if I can still expect a refund...

4x^
in my case, i got a late payment for work i did in 2004. by the time 2005 rolled around, i was busy applying to grad schools and forgot all about it.

it was still my fault, but, typically, i stay on top of that kind of stuff.

^
haha. the irs charges to set up a payment plan as well--something ridiculous like $105. can't win coming or going.

yeah and in addition to the payment plan you'll continue to pay interest twice

first, on the money you owe from years ago then again on the payment plan which is essentially financing your taxes

i'd recommend getting a folder and putting it somewhere smart. when tax shit starts coming in put it in the folder. sometime toward the end of jan or early feb, get the folder out and do your taxes. you don't even have to pay someone, turbo tax is pretty good and it can save you trouble down the road.

once you guys get real jobs the taxes get a lot higher and the fuckups are a lot more expensive. you should probably start forming good habits now.

well to that i say this:

"god damn some of you people are dumb"

because of this:

"i woulda got back like 300"

in conclusion, unless you mean that the government owes me interest on the money they never gave back to me because i didnt file, then your insult is a giant [FAIL]

i could see them hitting you with a late filing penalty or something silly, but i dont think they're gonna take interest out of your refund because they had to store it.

but hell, i dont know. i do pretty well with my taxes. they're already filed and im getting back like 24 bucks. its a miracle.

my mom told me that whole economic stimulus plan is gonna give me 300 bucks

ah dont get me started on that dumb crap. theres so much better stuff they could do with 150 billion than give the middle class 3 months worth of gas.

just bc the govt "owes" you $300 or whatever you THINK you're getting back

doesnt mean you can skip out on filing your damn taxes

i admit i overlooked that part of the post but the real issue her is not filing at all

then to the OP who OWES taxes and just didnt, well he's going to be paying interest for sure

its not like i'm a fucking tax pro. i'm going to owe somewhere in the neighborhood of $7k but i've known that for months and already had the money saved so it aint no thing.

whats with "owes" and THINK? why the sarcasm?

for most people in his position all you gotta do is grab a w2 and subtract a standard deduction and look at a chart. just cause he didnt file doesnt mean he doesnt know what his taxable income and tax was versus what was withheld.

are you having a bad day?

See my situation is a little different from just "not filing" i was an independant contractor- for those who aren't familiar with the term- Every penny I made came straight to me and uncle sam didn't take his cut as with most w2 employees- Because of this i was supposed to pay in approx. 25% quarterly which i did not realize initially- End of year came up and i had grossed in ballpark of 44k in which case 11k would be due to the gov... I didn't have that in savings so i neglected to file at all-

Seems like 3 years later i would have gotten a letter, call, email, something in regards to what I owe- My worry is with it being a little different as an independent contractor maybe it takes them a bit longer to catch up- If I call and ask then obviously i kiss my refund goodbye and if I file maybe the same- either way it is going towards taking care of something that inevitably needs to be done-

Just don't really wanna have it pop up now as my return is in the ball park of 6k which could def. be helpfull=

moral of the story here..... it appears I'm gonna get fucked either way so i may as well just file and see what happens?

jackleg i agree with you...this economic stimulus plan is a bunch of bullshit......fucking 15 percent of a trillion dollars because we got some douchebag president that wastes like 2 billion a week in iraq....had a professor yesterday tell us how there could have been 45k schools built with the money spent in iraq.....honestly i kinda want mccain to win in 08, cause if we pull out of iraq, we will have invested all this for nothing.....we gotta get some kinda return on this investment

^^^ i'd def contact them and get it resolved

you'll owe interest anyway and the longer you avoid it the more the interest will add up

I have a friend who has never paid taxes. He thinks that since he has never paid it he is somehow off the IRS' radar. According to his theory, as soon as you file taxes once you are stuck doing it for life. It sounded so at first, but after 10 years it is kinda
