I know there are several aged topics on webhosting, and yes, I have browsed them. The information is dated.

I am in charge of the website for a small nonprofit organization on a shoestring budget. The site is already designed and is temporarily being hosted on the personal webspace provided by my ISP. I would like to register a single domain name and get ad-free webhosting (updated through FTP access) for what would probably be fairly light traffic. Can someone point me in the right direction on one or both items?

I like site5.com. I use godaddy to handle my domains, but most hosts will do that for you. You can get everything you mentioned plus a lot more for less than $100 per year.

Cool about DreamHost for 501c(3), but this is a volunteer fire department which I believe is 501c(4).

I'm looking at the 1and1 Linux Beginner Package. I do not need any site creation tools. Just FTP access and ad-free pages. I think it would take a LONG time to eclipse 10 GB or content or 300 GB of monthly bandwidth. Right now, the whole site is about 5 MB. I could conceivably see it growing to a few hundred MB after several years. Anything I am missing that would handicap this package?

That package should be PLENTY enough for them. Unless they are making a video/photo site of some sorts, I dont see a way they would eclipse that, or even get close to the bandwidth limits.

There will be photos and video, but this is a small-town department. I don't think it could ever garner enough traffic to exceed the limits.

yeah 10GB is plenty of space. I'm hosting about 8 sites right now on my 1and1 account. I probably have 1GB of shit on there, but that's mainly thousands and thousands of pictures.

honestly, retard tech support aside, 1and1 has been a pretty amazing host for me. any time ive had an issue they have been extremely professional and responsive to it. I can honestly say they have been FAR better that my experiences with dreamhost (again though, just my singular experiences)

I really want to get the FiOS business class and host my own servers. Shit, I'd be willing to pay $160 to have 30mbps download and 15mbps upload on a static IP.

DreamHost said REJECTED! Unless we are actually 501(c)(3), we're out of luck. I'll have to clarify the department's status, but it looks like 1&1 is it.
