This still won't quell the discussion, since the scenario that is repeatedly proposed by those who say the plane would not move is not really viable within the realm of mythbusters... or physics, for that matter. 1/27/2008 4:17:28 PM |

there is no way a plane could fly if it were on a treadmill if it was going the same speed

Actually, that would generate some lift, but the body is meant to be stationary, so it would probably spin out of control and fall over. The biggest difference with that scenario is that the helicopter has no wheels.1/27/2008 9:13:33 PM |

Does anybody actually think this can happen? If you do you are a fucking moron and hope to god you did not go to NCSU.
Unless I am missing something about the myth, if air doesn't move over the wings nothing will happen.

in a slightly different scenario, could they put something on a plane to hold it in place along the x-axis, but let it have freedom of movement on the y-axis, and then get massive fans to propel wind across the wings at a speed that would result in takeoff?
this would be basically testing the opposite of this hypothesis. 1/27/2008 9:24:11 PM |

you are.
the treadmill moves in the opposite direction and speed as the plane, but it doesn't really matter since the wheels are free to spin as they please. it is the jet engines that push the plane forward, not the turning of the wheels.1/27/2008 9:32:48 PM |
CharlieEFH All American 21806 Posts user info edit post |
what if you take the jet engines out of the entire scenario?

I tried to explain this to my wife and that fucking simpleton thinks it does not move. She will be feeling quite stupid come Wed. night. 1/27/2008 9:42:11 PM |
Wolfmarsh What? 5975 Posts user info edit post |
For the love of god.
Yes, the wings are moving relative to the ground.
The treadmill is just making the wheels spin faster, they have absolutely no bearing on the plane moving foward. 1/27/2008 9:42:28 PM |
BEU All American 12512 Posts user info edit post |
when it was explained to me the person said that the tread mill went really fast which would somehow make the plane fly. nothing about the engines being used
so now I get it.

there have been many huge discussions on this exact topic on TWW, and yes, there are tons of people, including engineers, who think this can happen. Those people, like you said, are idiots.1/27/2008 10:27:19 PM |
