my friend is doing a research project in indonesia and posted this today on his blog. pure hilarity
Quote : | "After yet another trip to the jungle I’ve formed the following conclusion regarding Indonesian men: either there are a statistically improbable number of homosexual men living in Indonesia, or there are some fantastic (and apparently positive) rumors concerning the genitalia of white men.
Being the rare and fascinating specimen of a white male that I am, I often find myself in some rather pecular and socially anomalous situations. Although I remain ignorant of their content, these aforementioned rumors are so terrific as to completely overwhelm one’s social decency with curiosity. This leads to some inappropriate dinner-time inquiries and the frequent patting of my nether regions, ostensibly to check for size and structure.
Permit me to dispel a few myths up front. White men, unless the result of some unfortunate accident or genetic anomaly, have the usual structure you Indonesian men are accustomed to. Size does vary, but not to a degree you would envy or find disturbing (except in some rare cases).
Although I appreciate the concern it implies, it is not necessary to check the status or count of testicles (masih ada biji?) every 15 minutes. If there is a significant change in status or count, you can be sure I will notify you and everyone around me immediately.
Myths concerning my abilities are greatly exaggerated. I can assure you my genitals are not endowed with special powers. Exposing them to air does not, for example, cause terenchal downpours.
For my male Indonesian readers, please take this information under advisement the next time you meet a White Male. We’re just not that interesting downstairs. Or at least, we shouldn’t be that interesting to you." |

Well if Indonesian muslims have the same customs as middle eastern customs, then yes there IS alot of ingrained homosexual tendency built into the culture.

^^ it's from motion activated cameras mounted on trees. they are trying to capture photos of orang pendek, an unconfirmed bipedal primate that supposedly lives in the jungle of Sumatra
he is a photographer though and has a lot of cool photos from all over SE Asia

I love looking at Tim's feeds. Those Indonesians are obsessed with some semen! They aren't gay but they love some blond haired/blue eyes/American/white boy. Too bad Tim does not like the penis.

So this explains the suspicious rise in page requests. I had no idea.

I'm a pretty awful speller, but that's just downright embarrassing. I guess I botched it up and let the spell checker get a little carried away, although I don't think terenchal is a word either. Trenchant is, though.
The genital petting was a bit extreme, I'll admit, but I don't think it was related to homosexuality. Most Indonesian men in the area I lived had 1-2 sexual partners their entire lives. Sex is never discussed, so there's a great deal of ignorance and curiosity about it. In contrast, they believe I have sex with a different partner every night, so they understandably want to know what's going on down there. In addition, touching, especially between members of the same sex, is generally more acceptable, e.g. holding hands. I had to accept the total collapse of my personal "bubble" we Americans cultivate so well.
qntmfred is indeed correct about the cameras: they are Cuddeback digital camera traps, originally intended to photograph deer. World Wildlife Fund has some excellent information about camera traps, as well as some great photos from Sumatra and other places: http://www.worldwildlife.org/species/camera-traps/item4124.html
By happy coincidence, semen is the Indonesian word for cement. Although high-larious to see 50 lb bags of semen tossed about, it really does make a lot of sense. Padang is a city where this brand of semen is produced. It also means "field".
There are lots of tigers left in the world, but only an estimated 500 Sumatran tigers. And they're really not that dangerous. Occasionally a sick/old tiger wanders down and eats some unsuspecting farmer, but tigers usually try to avoid people. In contrast, bears can be extremely dangerous, as they will frequently wander into campsites and attack people for food (or as food). I'll take a tiger over a bear any day.
Thanks for the comments everyone; it's a great ego boost to suddenly learn you are talked about by a virtual room full of strangers somewhere.

Also, the History Channel's MonsterQuest consisted of British self-titled "explorer" Adam Davies coming out to our research site for a few days, setting up 4 camera traps for a couple of hours, and ending with a massive bonfire and a lot of liquor.
I suppose sensationalism like that stimulates interest in orang pendek, but let's not pretend this is any kind of real effort to find anything. 6/25/2008 3:12:19 AM |
