I just started a new temp job downtown near the History and Science museums. Today I parked in the pay lot since I didn't want to be late, but its $8/day.

Does anyone have any suggestions on where I can park for free? I know I can park along some side streets, but they fill up fast. I don't mind walking a couple of blocks as long as I don't have to spend $40/week on just parking.

I'm pretty sure that most side streets are like 2 hour parking as well or you have to have a street permit.

I don't know of any "free" places in downtown......your employer didn't offer anything?

I'd ask your employer if they had any suggestions; they might've had temps before in the same boat, if some of their current full times aren't already in that boat

If you work at the History and Science Museum, drive up Jones street and the on the street that runs perpendicular to Jones and on the back side of the Governor's mansion is free parking. you just have to move your car by 4 or get towed.

and if it is a state job, they should be providing you with a placard for your car so you can park in the pay lot for free.

a lot of bloodworth and east streets are free around the clock, if you don't mind walking a few blocks.

^^i saw those when i came this morning, but don't feel like moving my car on a daily basis. my job isn't technically a state job since i got it through a temp agency.

I work for the state and know first hand they won't be providing you with a space or placard. Gov't spots costs $10/mon and there's a waiting list. As for "free" parking, you can park along parts of Edenton St for free and around the Govenor's mansion. Good luck getting one tho. Most people get to work around 7 am to get them. But if you are willing to walk a good distance, you will find one. The place I park costs $30/month, but you have to pay quarterly. I guaranteed spot with an assigned number. If you want a name and number, PM me. The lot I park in is a few blocks from the museums.

be careful about some of those streets especially if they have residences on them. they are 2 hour or you have to have a permit.

If you're working for the state, def. ask them about parking. I'm an intern now and they cover parking in the pay lot.

This isn't free, but the First Baptist Church on Hillsborough is $5/day.

^ yeah, there are plenty of places that rent out spaces, and while it won't be amazingly better than city parking, you can obviously get a better deal by shopping around. But i wouldn't expect a free ride.

im doing the meter for one hour, then to person st. until 4, then back to the meter....$1/day (not too bad)

of course it is annoying to have to do this every day, but my car is readily available in case i wanna leave for lunch or something

park several blocks and fucking walk. there is plenty of free on street parking, but you will have to walk. You are not in the burbs anymore.

You may want to consider riding the bus, too. there are plenty of proffessionals that do.


Also, if you live near campus...cameron park, etc consider walking.

^yeah exactly. Parking in downtown Raleigh is easy. It's such a small area you can find parking on the streets anywhere. The only time i ever had trouble finding parking was the St. Patricks day parade, as to be expected.

Now parking in Charlotte is a COMPLETELY different issue, mainly since they started charging for 7th st. station. boo.

THere are some dirt cheap day lots in charlotte --read at the edges. Actually, if you are driving in, park near or at a lynx station for free. There is still some free street parking w/out restriction, but i'm not giving that away

For short trips, a lot of lots don't charge for the first 90 minutes.

I find when trying to understand a city it's easier to relate it to other cities. If you have an understanding of the layout of a variety of cities, it's WAAAY easier to understand a new city. For example after you've driven around LA, NYC, or Boston it's pretty easy to relate parking situations and scenarios to smaller cities around the US. I know the first time i got off the NJ turnpike into NYC i was scared shitless in highschool at rushhour but once i figured the layout of larger cities, it's MUCH easier to understand and quickly make decisions about smaller cities. In this situation relating Charlotte's parking to Raleigh's parking helps to create a better understanding of parking in general in NC.

^So now if you think my post about Charlotte parking was pointless, how did your post contribute to the thread?

I couldn't think of the street names for him (been a little bit), but ^ those are the ones I was thinking of. Even in the middle of the day, you can find an open one on those 2 or then next street east.

Here's the thing about Raleigh.

You can walk the entire "downtown" from the Legislature to Coopers in 10 minutes.

So from your location, you're basically good parking anywhere in the surrounding area.

good luck. there are random lots like youve talked about that i know of and a lot of monthly contracts. there is one unpaved area of land on south and mcdowell behind the newer parking deck that had a sign up about monthly parking for fairly cheap but to pay thats a damn hike and youd be better off parking in a neighborhood on the other side of downtown.
