Couldn't find another thread about it... but TMC is showing pretty much every movie ever to have an Oscar nomination 24 hours a day until early march, uninterrupted, commercial free. Not sure about edited/censored but still a decent thing to set the DVR to for some free movies

TCM = Turner Classic Movies
TMC = The Movie Channel

Big difference!

That being said, yes, the classic movies are cool as hell.

So, I just watched this movie today... 12 Angry Men

I dvrd it during the 31 days of oscar, but wow

Henry Fonda gives one of the best performances I have ever seen. To be such an old movie, I was totally captivated by every second of it. It was one of the more enjoyable things I have ever watched.

Henry Fonda is generally a great actor, period.

Why shouldn't you be captivated by an old movie?

I really can't stand this "OMG, I saw and old movie AND ACTUALLY LIKED IT" attutude. You should be beaten w/ something obscure, like a frying pan.

My tivo is filled w/ these movies. I'm having a hard time on deciding what to delete to make room for more, and if I should.

arcgreek,

what pisses me off more is the more frequent attitude of folks on the wolfweb that anything old has to be good. In fact I would argue that the opposite is actually true. Movies made during the "golden age" of cinimea, 30's and '40s, were ussually written and produced in a matter of months. And it showed. Between 1930 and 1945, the 8 largest studios produced an average 475 movies PER YEAR! Maybe that's why the dialouge sucked and the characters were 1-dimensional? That isn't even mentioning that old-time movie acting was incredibly wooden (it was before actors discovered "the method").

Even if you can name 20 movies made during this 15-year stretch that were any good, that's less than 0.5% of all the movies produced during that period.

IMO, the true golden age of movies is right now. Today. I mean, look at all the options we have. Big budget hollywood movies, heart-felt independent movies, spectacular bollywood movies. And they're as close as your local video store! We live in a very wonderful time.

I hate to break it to you, but the movie he's talking about was from 57'.

[Edited on March 4, 2008 at 7:59 AM. Reason : I'm pretty sure there is also a current theaterical production of it, too]

^ I never said it wasn't. I was replying to your more general comment about most people's attitude toward "old" movies. The fact that I never mentioned 12 angry men would probably be an indication my comments were not direct toward it particuarly.

But while we're on the subject, the movies made during the 1950's were better than the ones that came before (it's the decade that launched the careers of Marlon Brando, Billy Wilder, and many others), but I would still say more than 70% sucked.

And Henry Fonda only got better with time after 12 angry men. Compare his performance in "Once Upon a Time in the West" to say "The Grapes of Wrath". It's like night and day.

But but...marko...your tastes are ussually so good...

I actually like Steinbeck, but I put "Grapes of Wrath" in the same leauge as "Brave New World" or "Atlas Shrugged". Fiction so weighted with message that it becomes preachy and boring. Orwell seems to be the only person in the 20th century to pull off the political literary novel well. Before him, Swift is the only other person to come to mind. That really shouldn't suprise anyone. I think it was much more the century of Virginia Woolf.

And as a movie...well....let's move to a subject we can all agree on. Home Alone is the most under appreciated move of the past 20 years.
