yeah kinda ironic as the party that freed the slaves are the ones that don't support social programs to help impoverished people many of which are black. Guess stuff really hasn't changed since in 1860 that told states rights to go fuck themselves and to this day they still wipe their ass with the constitution. 2/3/2008 1:30:38 PM |

So Nixon won every state but Massachusetts in 1972 and two years later resigned?
Also Reagan won every state but Minnesota.
More green states in those early years.....was there even a Republican candidate running against Wilson? 2/4/2008 1:45:43 AM |

There were a good number of prominent democrats who supported Nixon over George McGovern because McGovern's policies seemed a bit extreme at the times. McGovern's campaign was damaged when he fired his VP due to his history of depression as well as by his reputation as the candidate for "acid, amnesty, and abortion." 2/4/2008 3:12:47 AM |

Behold, the power of scandal. Nixon might have actually had a decent legacy for himself (China, EPA) if it weren't for a few simple tape recordings. I liked the quote in Wikipedia:
Quote : | "James MacGregor Burns observed of Nixon, "How can one evaluate such an idiosyncratic President, so brilliant and so morally lacking?" Even George McGovern, eleven years after Nixon defeated him for the presidency, commented: "President Nixon probably had a more practical approach to the two superpowers, China and the Soviet Union, than any other president since World War II. ... I think, with the exception of his inexcusable continuation of the war in Vietnam, Nixon really will get high marks in history."" |
