Quote : | "Joining the Size Acceptance Revolution: Doing Your Part.
Our culture's idealization of slenderness results in personal and cultural biases against fat people, and causes discrimination against those who are larger than average. As an ally to fat people and to the size acceptance movement, there are a number of things you can do to help reverse this bias and end size discrimination. SIMPLE, IMPORTANT THINGS TO DO:
* Become a member of NAAFA (National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance) and renew your membership every year. To join, send your name, address, and $15 to: NAAFA, P.O. Box 22510, Oakland, CA 94609. * If you are a health professional with a waiting area outside your office, keep current issues of the NAAFA Newsletter and NAAFA brochures on hand for waiting clients. Recommend NAAFA to your fat clients. Consider displaying prints or art reproductions which celebrate large/fat people. * Make a pact with yourself to be politically active by writing a letter of protest to and advertisers or a TV show or a Congress person at least 2 or 3 times a year. Watch the NAAFA Newsletter for letter writing campaigns.
VERY PERSONAL GOALS Avoid participating in the diet culture:
* Do not work to maintain an unnaturally low weight. Do not go on weight-loss diets or engage in compulsive or excessive exercise programs. * Avoid all discussions of "good/bad" food and being "good/bad" in relation to eating. * Do not compliment anyone for losing weight, do not criticize anyone for gaining weight. * If you struggle with body image issues, try to discuss your feelings only with close friends, family, and/or a therapist. For instance, do not complain in public that you "hate your fat thighs" or "wish you were thinner" etc. Try to learn to accept/love your body. " |

For the most part, its a choice. There are some people who have genetic disorders that make losing weight next to impossible, for the 95+% of the people I say its pure fucking laziness2/3/2008 5:10:33 PM |

right, but as long as they don't also have genetic disorders that make them gain weight, they've still got a chance
they just have to make sure not to gain too much weight in the first place
just like if you have genetic alcoholism in your family
you can drink, so as long as you never actually develop an addiction (drink too much)
'cause once that happens, your genes are "against" you

start designing chairs bigger 2/3/2008 7:39:39 PM |

They already do design chairs bigger. My church has ones that are 50% wider than my ass, and I was wondering why they had them. Then today some older women (well they're in their late 50's and rather badly overweight) sat down next to me. They were encroaching upon my space pretty bad (the chairs are side by side so they were slightly wider than these chairs).
The failvolution has already begun!
Also, that site should be set on fire. If you're fat you're making my health insurance more expensive. Of course I have aidsabeetus which makes the health insurance more expensive for everyone else, too. I didn't sit on my ass and eat too much for 90% of my life to get to this point though. :E
And fat people have civil rights. In fact they're given quite a lot of courtesy considering. Special ambulances are made for the super obese, chairs are bigger, doorways are bigger. There's office chairs available for them at reasonable prices so they can sit comfortably and work in an office. There's all sorts of health related programs to help them keep their cardiovascular system healthy (or healthier than it could be) and to help them shed pounds that are going to help them breathe and function normally in every day life. It's embarrassing that some of them think this means that they're being oppressed.
I'm going to start an organization like this for diabetics dedicated to pressuring people into not drinking non-diet sodas or sweet tea around me and to ban cakes from restaurants. That'll show them! 2/3/2008 8:25:16 PM |
