I used to have a Champion Firebird, but that shit had some mad bite on it. I traded it to my friend who has an absolutely insane ability to find discs other people lose. He's literally found at least 15 discs. It's ridiculous.

After 3 years of promises and hopes, the Ashe County Disc Golf Course finally has 18 holes. This is an absolutely magnificent course. When a little more detail work gets put in (concrete tee pads and stuff), it will truly be championship caliber.

Professional Tees tour:

The Ice Bowl at Jefferson will be held on Sat, Feb 16. One round, divisional. Pros and Advanced from the pro tees. All other divisions from the am tees. $20 entry fee, all proceeds going to the Ashe County Humane Society. Following the tournament will be a polar plunge for charity.

anyone got anymore info on this 'Joe Who?' event?

I've only ever played in one other tourney and that was at Cedar Hills. I know the Kentwood course like the back of my hand, so for two rounds hopefully I could finish double digits under. Would this give me a chance to be in the top 5 even (AM category)?

well, im planning on playing in that tourney...and i know a lot of guys who shoot about what i do out there at kentwood...im not sure what div to play in, maybe the lower since i havent played in a while. maybe higher to give myself a challenge. but if conditions are average, i would expect myself to shoot around -20 after 2 rounds...i know other guys who are my friends out there who would shoot similar to better, but prob not play the lowest div

2 Ice Bowls in the mountains in recent weeks.

Two weeks ago Hickory held their Ice Bowl at Hilton Park. Two rounds: one singles, one doubles (paired highest w/ lowest from the singles). Mulligans available at one can of food per. Pretty warm, not much wind.
I shot a relatively lousy +2 on the singles round but came out with an also seemingly lousy -6 in the doubles. Turns out that it was a lousy day for everyone and we come out with the best score in the doubles round. I get a nice Pro Destroyer as a prize for the doubles win. My combined score put me at the #3 overall player for the day (no prizes ).

Big event yesterday at the brand new Ashe County Course in Jefferson. This was the first event ever held with all 18 holes in effect. The turnout blew us all away, with 72 golfers showing up and raising a total of $10,411 for the Ashe County Humane Society. (A lot of the money came from a Polar Plunge that was held in conjunction with the Ice Bowl.)
I entered the pro division (first time I've ever done that) and end up pleased with a score of 63 (+3) and a 6th place finish. Raleigh native Jack Schmalfeld finished 2nd with a 58.
Scores and photos:
http://www.thehighcountrydiscgolfclub.com/messageboard/viewtopic.php?t=113

Now that this course is more or less finished, there's no excuse for some of you Raleigh assholes not to make a trip up here to check it out.

One night I was paired with Joe Who for Kentwood doubles and there was a huge downpour and thunderstorm. EVERYONE else on the course was under the shelter except for our foursome, because Joe was convinced that if it was our time to go, a shelter wasn't going to stop Jesus from taking us.

I need some new courses as the rotation of Kentwood, Cedar Hills and Buckhorn is getting repetitive. I need a new challenge. UNC's course is solid, but not when it has been raining like it has. I've played Zebulon a few times and it's a damn good course, but kinda far. Swingin' DB's is also good, but those dudes out there are a little whack. The course is Knightdale is cool too, but when I go I feel like I'm gonna leave there with yellow fever.

what can anyone tell me about the two courses in Durham?

I'm thinking about trying out the Valley Springs Course tomorrow and would be interested in some feedback. Is the Cornwallis Road Park course any better or worse?

haha that guys post about needing help with his drive, and then my info on help def gone thanks to teh wonderful server we have

^cornwallis is a shorter but more technical kentrock. lot of ace runs if you can throw it where you want it.

valley springs is fun, the front nine is easy but it progressively gets harder moving onto the back nine. and there are 4 new holes after you finish 18, they are tough.

^^ hey, I never got a chance to check whatever advice you had. mind reposting?

but basically my question, if anyone else want to chime in is...

my putting and approach/saving-pars-after-fucking-up games are fine. I can pretty much hang at kentwood, which I play most b/c of location... i shoot anywhere from -2 to -9ish depending on how well I'm throwing. I played the Great Eight last year, doubles, and I thought my brother and I did pretty well together on a variety of courses.

I've got some aces too, so it isn't like i have NO power, but I want to be able to play KWwithout ever having to take out my drivers, and play cedar hills/buckthorn and be able to get birdie opporunities on the longer holes.

for example, on #11 at KW, I'll end up throwing a driver.. beast (that was one of my aces), sidewinder... something with a good s-curve and hope I can get that action. Really, I should be aiming to be able to throw midrangers at it, right? On, say, hole #4 I throw a short driver.. Leopard, aiming at an ace run. Should I be breaking that deep into my bag for such a short hole?

I know that I'm never gonna be throwing classic roc uphill on #5 or #7... me, anyway ... but I'd like to know if anyone has any all-around-power tips?

I hold the disc with what would be a "power grip" except no ring or pinkie finger. Sometimes I go full power grip on long drives. I tend to hold the disc and throw it from low... like right where the strike zone would be... above waist-high.

Hold it higher? I run kindof a half-x-step except, also, when trying to throw my back out on long drives.

Lighter discs? I go for 170ish.

Better plastic and learn to flick my wrist harder? I stay away from Champion plastic except on drivers.

Thanks guys.

Ended up playing Valley Springs not too long ago. Good course. Tough course. I played from the 'white' tees, because some of the blues looked ridiculous and I didn't think it would be fun for me if I played from there. The last four holes (18-22) are crazy long, but fun.

Can someone help me get together a list of homegrown courses around the area? I have a few that I can think of around the area, but people seem to guard the locations to these places like they are hiding nuclear secrets or something.

A friend of mine quotes Ken Climo as saying that you only need to be able to throw ~350 ft accurately to compete at a high level. Some will argue that's a little low. For me, I can throw an accurate 350 ft hyzer, anhyzer, straight, or S-curve. That in my experience is all you need.

Quote :
"for example, on #11 at KW, I'll end up throwing a driver.. beast

hole #4 I throw a short driver.. Leopard, aiming at an ace run. S"

Hole #11 is hole that you should be able to get with a straight midrange disc. If you can't get there with a staight roc, then you need to work on your technique. Same with hole #4. Nowadays I'm equally accurate throwing putters on those holes.

Honestly I think a lot of it is mental. You don't believe a straight shot with a midrange has the power to make it on #11. Trust me, it does if you have good technique.

Quote :
" but I'd like to know if anyone has any all-around-power tips? "

Learn to use the power-grip on all midrange and driver shots. Yes it'll feel weird at first, and you'll have to practice to gain touch with it, but it adds a lot more power to your shot. Use other grips for putts and approaches as needed.

Quote :
"I tend to hold the disc and throw it from low... like right where the strike zone would be... above waist-high."

Watch some YouTube videos. You'll see guys getting their full body into the shot. I try to bring the disc back on a straight line and pul through on the same line. You can do this by extending your arm straight out when pulling it back, cocking the elbow as you bring the disc past your chest, then allow your elbow to straighten out before finally releasing it. This way you generate more momentum by holding the disc longer without a big change in applied force.

Quote :
"Hold it higher? "

The ideal height is solely determined by your stature. Some like to release the disc low with hyzer. These players use understable discs for this shot, which will flip up and level off. Most players like myself release it very level to generate that long straight shot.

Quote :
"I run kindof a half-x-step except, also, when trying to throw my back out on long drives."

Your back has no bearing on distance. You need good shoulder rotation, torqu form your lower body, and good snap from your elbow and wrist.

Quote :
"Lighter discs? I go for 170ish."

Shorter throwers often throw lighter discs. It's not a bad strategy, but keep in mind that lighter discs are flippier and are more susceptible to the wind.

Quote :
"Better plastic and learn to flick my wrist harder? "

Plastic type as practically nothing to do with distance. Regular plastic will wear out and get flippy faster. Also remember that your wrist snap is only a portion of the throwing motion. Lookup some YouTube videos and experiment a little to find what works best for you.

^ lots of good advice.

I agree with almost everything said.

With my game I saw two major improvement that in turn made me much much better. The X-step and the power grip. Both of these when i first changed them felt extremely uncomfortable, however they probably gave me over 100 feet of distance over time. I have about 360 feet of controllable distance and in a field can throw around 400. If I throw a pure mid on 11, i'll be on 12's tee. So, with practice and playing, you should be able to throw a mid or putter. (I throw the flick and slam it in the bank)

Anyway, if you really want to improve, putt, putt, putt. This is where strokes are lost and gained. My weakest part of my game becaues i hate to practice putting and i love to play and throw. Work on every aspect of your game. forehand, backhand, thumber, tomahawk, nose down putting in the wind, jump putts. One of the most important shots for me ( a lot of people don't use) is a 80 to 100 foot thumber skip approach.

Well, apparently I like to rant. Um if any of you guys wanna catch a round pm me. I don't like kentwood for the sole reason it eats up plastic, but i do play cedar a bunch along with chapel hill.

Practice fool

edit: also i'd like to add that if you don't have the accuracy and distance, play within yourself. This is the sole reason i suck balls at tourneys. I play shitty at one point in a round and then i try to gain strokes by throwing a shot that is dumb. If you just play smart with what you have, you should emerge into a better golfer.

can any of you recommend some discs, and how many i would need, for somebody just starting out? not looking to spend much money and not really looking for this to be a real intense hobby, just something to go out and have fun doing. very casual, nothing as hardcore as some of you guys seem to be.

ok. get some midrange discs and a putter. I would get a dx or kc roc. it'll probably be stable for you until you get better. get a stingray or a cobra. a lepeard if you really want a driver. and a kc aviar or wizard for approach and putting. If you throw over hand throws, use a firebird or something else stable with a bead.

Thanks for the advice, guys. I've been X-stepping for awhile but not with a full body twist... mostly it was just an aiming technique.. comfortable to run up that way. Lately, though, I've added my ring finger to my grip to try to make the full-time move to power grip (baby steps... heh)

At KW I dropped back to my KC Roc on 4 today, and threw a midrange on #11. Still busted out the big boys for 5, 7, and 14.

But I think playing cedar hills more often will help as much as anything. Moving to the back tees where available and not trying to use big-time drivers in the woods.

On #2 at Cedar the other day, I had a tap-in, and was driving a lot better (having long putts or easy approaches) on some of those intermediate-type holes ... 3, 6, 10, etc...

As far as putting.. I'd say it is one of the better parts of my game. I also have no problem with approaches from the 80-100' range and using clever throwing techniques.

It really is all about that narrow 200-250' drive being an adventure with a driver vs. no problem with a midrange/approach disc, I think.
