Say a person was to rear end someone who was driving erratically. The rear ender pulled over to exchange info, check for damage, etc the rear-endee promptly sped away without stopping at all.

The rear ender went to look for the rear endee to make sure they did not stop down the road and the rear endee was nowhere to be found.

Does the rear ender have any further responsibility to the situation?

If they don't have your info, they can't get your money to fix it and you can deny hitting their car.

They probably had no license or had a warrant or something.

the person you hit might have been drunk

probably better to have a dent than a dui

^^^ and ^^

this was most likely the case (warrent, drugs, no license and if you are over the limit it is always your fault in a wreck

i rear ended someone because she came to a sudden stop in the middle of an intersection- we pulled over and there was no damage to my car but a big dent/hole in her bumper. I said i'd call the cops so we could get a report, but she was adimit about not involving them to the point where she said there was no damage. My guess is that she, nor the "hypothetical" rearendee had any business driving

i got into a little rear end scuffle with an old man.

i pulled over behind him, went up to his window to ask his deal, dude pulled out a foot long knife on me. i walked back to my car and called the cops.

what would have been my fault turned into his because he pulled out his knife, on top of that he drove away when i got back in my car.

so i could have done hit and run on him, but didnt want to go through with insurance/police.

even if they do have your info, they can't do anything if they didn't file a police report at the scene (at least in pennsylvania, i can't imagine it'd be any different anywhere else).

This happened to me like 2 weeks after I turned 16.

I hit a car and the guy got out, he was hispanic, he looked at the back of his truck and said, please do not call cops and left

so I didn't call the cops and I left too, but I made sure he never got my tag number...I stayed far far behind him...

the I went home and got the wrath of my dad...which was a lot better cause it wasn't the wrath of my dad, and the cops and the insurance
